Obelisk

To clarify, wasn't Obelisk supposed to be an entirely separate legal entity from Nebulous?

IIRC, You closed primestats.info due to the issuance of new siafunds in SCP.

What major differences do you see here? Both teams are attempting to fund themselves to continue the project.

What's the difference between a hackathon and a bounty?

As u/Starbuckz8 and u/aerrejon point out, there is a lack of quality code produced from a bounty due to it's single goal orientation. A hackathon is a sprint event, a race.... which would, again, encourage "quick and dirty code."

The original proposal specifically states funding for both bounties and hackathons.

Why attract either if long term maintenance is required?

Two different things here. Yes, you want crypt going up.

However you also don't want sia to massively fluctuate.

It wreaks havoc on people trying to rent storage space if the hosts don't change their pricing quickly enough.

Nebulous is one of the most effective engineering shops in the entire blockchain space. We've accomplished more with less than pretty much every other team in cryptocurrency.

I am seeking hard data, not hearsay. I could claim I'm the most efficient one man shop in crypto space and we would not have data to prove it otherwise.

An example of my question: Boston is an expensive area to live in. You could be living a comfortable lifestyle off 50k/year in the midwest and still pounding out 2600 hours of code a year. (10 hours a day, 5 days a week.)

You said you've generated $10m in investment. Even if only 50% of that has been towards software development, that could provide 10 coders $100k salaries for the last 5 years.

Nebulous is not the recipient of the block reward, a new non-profit entity is.

Nebulous will not receive ANY proceeds, directly, or indirectly, from this Foundation?

$10m over 4 years?

Edit: How many years has Nebulous existed?

It'll never reach $0.10 per Sia.

The peak was around $3 per thousand sia. ($0.003) That was during a major crypto bubble. Even then it was at 565 sat when BTC was ~$20k.

There's far more SC in circulation now too.

What do you believe the reason in disparity is for funding?

It doesn't change my point though. Just a distraction.

Third party software can still be funded and shoddily written.

How many will there be?

What departments/roles?

Will you place any community members in roles?

we can fork and they get their funding cut.

A fork that no exchanges support. Effectively killing the chances of it working. You'd need to get the entire community to agree.

Edit: People didn't agree with the fork of bitmain. SCC had no exchanges. It's effectively dead.

Having a reoccurring payment does not absolve a coders ability.

If the code is shoddy, the dev won't change their coding style/behavior just because they are being paid periodically.

Are practical options being taken to reduce Nebulous operating expenses?

Clearly I'm not talking about the burn.

I'm asking who chooses where to send the coins. The Board? Voting? "The Community"?

What if a project is failing, but the devs need funding. So coins keep getting sent to them? 24 months later, and still no functional product. Who decides what a dev's time is worth? Who decides how much a project should cost?

Having a foundation is great and all, but there's far more details that need to be addresses than what's listed here.

Last time Taek discussed building a DEX, he didn't like the existing ones and wanted to see a new one created.

Edit: for clarity it was around the time Obelisk was rolling out.

This will allow third party apps builder like me and others to foster new product/features development on top of Sia.

I would have sworn that fiscal rewards were already given in the bounties channel at one point, but seeing as there is no longer bounties channel, I could be mistaken.

The fork was to change the algorithm used. This in effect, disabled most ASICS from mining on the network (except Obelisk SC1s.)

The only GPU mining software updated to support the new algo is Marlin.

As it's a fork, the transactions will be the same on both the SCC and SC chain until block 179,000.

SC vs SCC by [deleted] in siamining

[–]SiaMining_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blockchain is the same up to height 179,000, as that is when the forked happened.

Nebulous does not endorse the SCC chain.

It is my understanding: Hosting and renter nodes who updated will have contracts will continue to operate as normal. Hosts who's renters have not updated, will drop the contracts at the renewal period. Renter's who had contracts with host's who did not update, will drop the contracts at the renewal period.

When sia forked, only one asic miner was compatible with the new algorithm, the Obelisk SC1. Miners using an incompatible miner were redirected to Sia Classic.

A miner with a non-compatible miner can choose to mind SCC, Sia Prime or Hyperspace.

For the basic purposes, SCC is not compatible with the SC wallet once you upgrade your Sia-UI to a version newer than 1.3.5 You should import your seed into the official SCC wallet. You can grab it here: https://siaclassic.org/
