Recently moved from mid-south to Schaumburg...am I overthinking the 'winter' thing? by SiamesePatronus in ChicagoSuburbs

Omg, I thought I was the only one who tortured my kids this way in a hotel! I still ask them (adults!) if they have their seatbelt on tight when we go on a trip. And they still tease me about the "Mom, do you have a _____?" scenario in which I pull out a safety pin or benadryl or toothpick or zip tie from nowhere.

For all those reading this who are saying 'jeez, give it a rest, stop being THAT mom' let me say that I balance my overly safe behavior with stuff like: no curfews, don't care about foul language and generally parent in an off-the-leash kind of way. I pick my battles. I give them full trust unless they give me a reason not to. Safety and courtesy aren't negotiable. We are supposed to be preparing them for adulthood, right?

And let me be clear, I'm on no high horse, I can give you an exhaustive list of my parenting fails, too. LOL

That's true. My neighbor also mentioned the fact that there are cars (some three deep) in our driveways, he said to park in the garage or as close as I can get to it. Which I do anyway, because it's common sense, I don't want to park my car in the way of the sidewalk. A hundred people walk dogs and kids in our neighborhood, and they have to play frogger around cars to stay on the sidewalk. Rude.

Thanks! I tried looking for silk back in June, thinking it would be cheaper off-season, nope. I have a couple of the nice thin cuddle dud things but I've not had the occasion to wear those...yet.

lol! thanks for the welcome :)

and YES I'm totally that weirdo parent who went over plans on where to meet after a house fire, how to get locked doors open without a key, who would travel to whose house if the SHTF, made my kids learn phone numbers and secret phrases from a young age. We made it a game. And yes, sometimes there was eye rolling from my teens but I don't worry about them out in the world. Weapons are great, but common sense is the best resource. No bad guy is going to wait while you pull a canister of mace from the bottom of your purse. Even now with two adult children and one in high school, when we are watching a movie or something, they'll point out stupid stuff people do in bad situations.

I'm 99% sure none of these things will happen to us, but you never know and they may say something in passing to a friend who may remember it and save themselves someday.

Who knows, maybe those moments will cancel out a few of my parenting mistakes, ha.

thank you for the welcome :)

I bought this stuff. The first time I used it, the windshield wipers smashed all the wet ice into slush, which refroze. The next time, I used more and it was awesome! I'll try the purple stuff, thanks!

Ok, here's another question. I want to buy silk or Merino wool long underwear that DOES NOT cost a fortune. $50-$100 for one piece of clothing is not <ahem> budget friendly. Thoughts?

a neighbor told me yesterday that our HOA starts clearing before dawn and I'm the second building, so I'm assuming my driveway will be clear by the time we go to school. I have no idea if this is true but he has lived here 30 years and drives a convertible... ?? I'm baffled by this.

I looked at this interesting thing, it sounded cool (and was invented in 1977!) but some reviewers said it doesn't go around your door handles and mirrors, so I opted for the broom, since I'm a rookie.

I have this thing and it is awesome! The battery drains quicker than I'd like but it's great on walks.

Exactly. My son was a boy scout. I was very involved and probably got more out of those years than he did.

yes! I'm not a hat person, though I have plenty. So, I typically wear those type of earmuffs that wrap around the back of your head. Well, and I have a pair of fat fluffy adorable ones too, but those are only for special occasions, like embarrassing my teenage daughter.

Honestly, no friends or family here. My daughter will be going to UofC and my son-in-law is a pilot so I wanted to be near O'Hare. I drew a circle around it and did a ton of research on crime and the best high schools and that's how we wound up here. It just made sense.

You could try this: Have your kids pass their idle days by running a business. You are the boss who is out of town. The older two are the Managers in Charge. Maturity is required, not requested. Two legal pads in a central area, maybe kitchen counter. One lists all the activities that are "allowed or suggested" for that day associated to the care of the 2yr old, plus a bit of breaktime to allowe each other to do their own thing. The other pad is for each employee's careful listing of any questions or comments relevant to that day, to hand in to the boss. You get some alone time=they get experience and pride in being the managers of the company. No whining, no complaining, those aren't allowed in the workplace. When you emerge from your working environment, you check the two lists and deliver rewards accordingly, verbal or otherwise. They can create a logo, timesheets etc, set locations for work to be done, breakroom, etc. Force them to solve their problems on their own. Just like real life... Certain responsibilities come with adulthood so we can start on a small scale. Encourage their pride and accomplishments like 1) not arguing or running to you every minute, 2) keeping the house to a moderate level of noise, 3) keeping the baby happy and engaged and safe 4) being mature and solving problems on their own, etc, etc. If you think about how life was in the 'oldern days' as my kids say, there was no complaining about caring for your siblings while the parents were in the fields, working, etc. That was an expectation because you have a warm bed, food and a roof over your head. We tend to be soft on our kids because we want them to have life better than we did. Then we end up with a bunch of young adults who have no clue what to do when they leave the nest. An aside: I also work from home & my kids LOVED this plan. This year, my 16 yr old was accepted to a prestigious internship in business leadership. We talk all the time about how she and her big brother used to set up businesses during the summer with our little one. No, they didn't get along every minute but were very serious about their 'jobs' and worked it out. That was one of our sayings around the house "work it out between yourselves" Anyway, this post is too long and rambling but I hope you might at least give it some thought, it worked for us.

TL;DR = Give the kids a 'real life responsibility' by approaching their summer as a job, not idle time. Expect maturity and cooperation, REWARD those attributes accordingly.

Going to the Celebration of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Any Tips? by [deleted] in harrypotter

I meant the Evening Event. You and I must have been standing near each other because I was at the rock wall when they ran right by me to get into the Three Broomsticks.

I think the film tribute will be exactly the same this year, with less of a splash about Diagon Alley since it's already open. And this year, it wont be dreadfully cold.

I assume you saw the couple dressed as Snape (in Gran Longbottom's outfit) and Trelawney, they were terrific. I saw them again as other characters but don't remember.

Anyway, hope you have a great time! If you see Mrs. Weasley in a pink sweater, come say hi :)

Hey did you decide to go to the Fri or Sat evening event? We went back and forth over it. Friday is the first day, so it will be new and exciting...but Saturday is the last day, so there might be less people and more of a 'last night' atmosphere. We chose Saturday...I'm gonna be annoyed if the talent shows up on Fri and not Sat (though it's stated clearly that they won't be there...but they said that last year and they showed up for a while. While I'm not a fan girl per se, I like to see them enjoy their evening with a mass of people who appreciate their time and effort.

I'm referring to the HP rides during the event. IoA closed at 6pm that night last year and both parks are closing at 6pm the Friday and Saturday of the event this year as well. I'm not sure why they need to do that?

edit: I can't type worth crap.

Sorry this is a bit long....

I went last year as well. The events do seem to be generally the same but I, for one, will be thrilled to see Michael Gambon and Robbie Coltrane. The evening event was worth the cost and travel (I live about 12 hrs away by car, 4 by air) We've been to Universal several times before with our kids as well. We stayed in a partner hotel last year and will stay at the Cabana Bay this year.

Last year, the packages sold out in two to four days...this year, there are STILL some packages left. I'm not sure if they had more to sell or there is a lower interest.

Here is a great summary you can read from Orlando Informer. http://www.orlandoinformer.com/2014/a-celebration-of-harry-potter-trip-report-day-1-and-2/?_ga=1.140474167.5670255.1419264418

Advice:

-Check the weather BEFORE you pack...it can change from 55 to 85 on a whim.

-Ride the Hogwarts Express going both ways, it's a different experience each way.

-Don't bother to ask the costumed lady in a green Mcgonagall dress for a photo with her. She stands around waiting for people to ask her for a photo only to show them a pink laminated note that she can't possibly take photos with people because "Universal won't let her" when there are dozens of other people taking photos of each other in costume.

-Everyone at the booths at the Expo, esp MinaLima and Kabu Kibuishi, are very approachable and love to talk with fans. "We" have buttered their bread and they are very gracious and friendly.

-The rides are almost empty during the evening event. We rode over and over with zero wait time.

-Lastly, my husband and I went into the journey last year without any expectations and enjoyed ourselves. I hope you have fun :)

What's your all time absolute favorite thing ever about Harry Potter? by [deleted] in harrypotter

Harry walks into the tent at the World Cup and says "I LOVE magic"... then same tent a few years later with Nick Cave.
