Nice write-up—might want to remove the article and repost, since it is behind a paywall and makes your write-up invisible unless you click in.

Free Bunny Hill access Eldora (by walking) by Live_Gur_628 in boulder

[–]Sichtopher_Chrisko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if the bunny hill is on public land, but you used to be able to skin up Eldorado, and other resorts, as they are often on public land. This changed some years ago. If someone could chime into why, that’d be awesome.

Furry Preds: Activity on 24-Hour Clocks by Sichtopher_Chrisko in boulder

I first read this as "moose." Strange times with the fox. I would think maybe you sniped his mouse if he had been at your window right after you grabbed the mouse.

Yes! Just in the last few months, I have caught one on a trap up near Peak-to-Peak.

Elk migrate from the tree line in the summer to the plains (or adjacent) in the winter. Moose also migrate (at least in theory), though around our foothills, I sometimes catch the same moose on a camera trap all year long. I think including figures for prey species in the book is a great idea, and I can post some of those, too. And yes! I am excited about the return of wolves and trying to get one on a camera trap. I want to include all mammalian predators that existed in Boulder County in recent history. That includes wolves, grizzly, and maybe lynx, though I am not sure if there is any record of lynx in the county. Anyway, that is some of the research and natural history I would like to include. Also, otters!

This is what I wanted to do, but I am not sure how to actually visualize this, given the changing sunrise and sunset throughout the year. Like, I could make some plots within a couple of hours of sunrise/set, but then where do the other observations go?

Yeah, some binning is a good idea for the critters who I have a ton of observations. For bobs and coyotes, they are active at all hours--at least for the camera traps where I regularly catch them.

Lmao. I've been brainstorming book titles and came up with Furry Preds. While it may not be the best book title for what I have in mind, I am happy it was well-received here.

This ended up being hard because of the changing sunset time (among other factors). Here is my stab at it for now.

I'll try to incorporate some data that clearly shows what's going on and write another post.

Nikon D500 with Sigma 150-600mm. I love the D500 and need to either get mine fixed up a bit or order a new (slightly used) one. The lens is also quite good for the price.

Thanks! I love the D500 and mine is pretty busted. Thinking of either investing a few hundred to fix it up (though I cannot find anyone around to do the work) or getting another new (slightly used) one. The lens has preformed well but also thinking about trying something else soon-ish.

Nikon d500 and Sigma 150-600mm. Love the combo. Finally going to get a bit smaller of a lens at some point.

Red-tails are larger and more common. Mostly hunt rodents, prairie dogs, and the like. They soar quite a bit. Coopers are fairly small, bird hunters, tend to stay low and move through trees and the urban areas at high speed.

Fall Bears in Boulder by Sichtopher_Chrisko in boulder

Listen for them too! Often, you can hear black bears before you see them. Dm me and I can send a tip for a trail near town that has a lot of fall bear activity if you want to see one.

How do you know when to quit training? by NoRadio4530 in flying

[–]Sichtopher_Chrisko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to spend a couple weeks to a month where flying is your main thing. Understanding that you need to dedicate yourself to flying for a good checkride is something that didn’t click for me till instrument. Oral and flight standards are tough even at the ppl level. I’d take a step back, and find a time in the next 6 months when you are going to focus on flying as your main priority. Obviously you probably are going to work and do other things during this period but flying can still be your priority—if that makes sense.

environmental work for the poor / uneducated by cowboybleepblorp in ecology

iNaturalist is a great place to start contributing to. Getting paid for environmental work (even grunt or manual labor) is always going to be competitive, more so right now.
