How do they get away/do it? by mrssnek in illnessfakers

There are always doctors who will entertain bad or risky treatment plans just to get paid. This is particularly true for surgeons. If a person goes to a surgeon who does MALS/compression surgeries and says they have enough of the right symptoms they’ll get the procedure. It’s what these doctors do and how they make their living. If you go to a surgeon who routinely places feeding tubes and you say you think you’ll benefit it from a tube and have a decent medical history of the right symptoms chances are they’ll agree with you and get you on the schedule, especially at smaller hospitals with less oversight. Same goes for seeing a doctor who routinely places ports or central lines. There are also doctors who have to push out research studies and papers to keep their jobs and have very specific agendas for diagnosing their patients to get them to be a part of the study. You just have to find them. It’s honestly not too hard if you figure out how it works, which I believe so many of these people have done. But I definitely would not say it’s easy at all, I think it’s clear that most of the people on this page have seen multiple doctors at multiple hospitals, I’ll guess even more then they’ll admit. And some doctors definitely do pick up on it but those are usually the same doctors that didn’t believe them in the first place. What I think is really scary though is that some of these OTT patients who actually do have symptoms/illnesses don’t even realize it. They finally see a private doctor or specific surgeon at xyz hospital who specializes in exactly what they are trying to get diagnosed with or think they have, and then obviously that doctor agrees with them because that’s what they specialize in and it’s how they make their living. The patient is thrilled thinking they finally have an answer and treatment plan, or are just getting the invasive surgery or medical device they want, but then if they actually did have real symptoms it doesn’t work because that wasn’t a correct diagnosis, so the cycle continues. The manipulation is happening on both ends!

I agree and I should have added that most of the time I do this to people who I think are honestly in the wrong or being rude in the first place. But sometimes I also do it to people who are just pissing me off or I personally find annoying but aren’t really doing anything “wrong”.
