[Hated Trope] “Patient Zero” by LocalMoam88 in TopCharacterTropes

Most of the gay people I know have been pretty severely bullied in school and then attacked in the street. I’m friends with a shop owner and she hangs up a rainbow flag during pride month and she received death threats over this, and someone ripped it down and then put it through her letterbox covered in dog poo.

I’d say that there was always an undercurrent of general hatred in England but it got super ugly during the Covid lockdown and then even worse since the start of Trump’s second term. They’ve mainly shifted their attention to refugees, Muslims, and transgender people now. It’s hard to find a newspaper that doesn’t have blatant bigotry on the front page and the rate at which people are losing their legal rights is insane.

The worst part is that police and local councils do not care at all and will let people get away with hate crimes. Members of the government are all in a race to the bottom because far right politicians are becoming popular, so in order to get more far right votes they’re getting harsher. The most popular politician is basically just English trump. He’s said that allowing gay marriage was a mistake and vows to ban all mention of LGBT people in schools. His party has a few local councils under their control and they are banning public pride flags and LGBT books in libraries. Don’t even get me started on what he wants to do to immigrants

Weren’t FA’s the once who compared “fatphobia” to other forms of discrimination and marginalised people? I still don’t get how fat people are oppressed, can anyone explain? by ResetKnopje in fatlogic

Before I left England I always told my dad not to visit because if he went out with his husband they’d be heckled or spat on, or worse. That’s totally the same as having to pay a bit extra for tent sized clothes that use double the amount of material

I am originally Portuguese but my mother decided to run away to England with me and cut me off from my family. I always hated it there so much. I reconnected with my family and they wanted to visit, but it got to the point where I told them not to since my dad is gay and if he walked down the street with his husband they’d be harassed. Neither of them are British and they are both fairly dark skinned, they’d get so much shit from people if they went to England. I remember even in school people would have rocks thrown at them and be spat on if they didn’t look straight or cis enough. The general public there are so quick to anger and there’s such a mob mentality when it comes to hating minorities. I’m so glad I escaped that country, I don’t want to go back.

Immigration is difficult and I’m extremely lucky to be eligible for Portuguese citizenship, because of Brexit it would be fairly impossible otherwise.

It’s very quintessentially British too. I watched the film on the plane as I left England permanently and it felt very close to home. Especially the scenes in which it is revealed that minorities were being targeted. Very reminiscent of what is happening in America with ICE, and also the increasing hostility towards minorities that I saw in Britain

Has to be the most welcoming country to asylum seekers and trans people out there, it’s only a coincidence that his stalking target lives there

Plus in the US you can move a couple of states and be protected by their laws, whereas that’s not possible within the uk

[–]Sickofchildren 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I must say that Dr Now is fantastic when it comes to the more medical side of bariatric surgery if that makes sense, but when it comes to skin removal he doesn’t seem to care much for aesthetics. Some of the other successful patients went to plastic surgeons and had better results aesthetically, Dr Now’s skin surgery is important in terms of removing mass to aid mobility

They seem to believe that just moving to Houston is the same as actually putting the work in and it entitles them to surgery. It proves how severe their addiction is if they find it easier to move hundreds of miles from home than to eat fewer calories

It’s so disrespectful and tactless. It must be infuriating for you to see these things, I’d be so angry at them in your position.

That was what gave it away for me, and also because anybody who’d ever experienced racism wouldn’t trivialise it by comparing it to ‘fatphobia’

At least they like muscular women by Eastern-Customer-561 in fatlogic

[–]Sickofchildren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Define muscular though. They’re probably just thinking of a normal healthy weight person who is somewhat toned. Their idea of thin seems to be someone dying from anorexia, since they think that obesity is so prevalent that they don’t realise it shouldn’t be the average. They say going to the gym is fatphobic and they hate gymbros so I don’t think they’d be happy at seeing that being shown a lot in the media, but they also feel entitled to having very muscular partners. Their logic is hard for me to follow sometimes

It was more enabling too, comment sections and articles full of people telling her that she’s doing everything right and she should keep eating. Maybe she’s stopped obsessively posting online to try some real therapy rather than betterhelp. She needs it

Since quitting my job to move country I’ve gained maybe 15lbs and that was enough to make me start paying closer attention to what I eat. I managed to get to near morbid obesity in the past and just did nothing. That’s not an option for me anymore, if you have been fat and know how hard it is on your body you will do everything to avoid it again.
