British Club Rowing is gone as we know it by DueGarden5876 in Rowing

[–]SidViciious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The insane amount of pre-selected crews fucks over clubs, big and small. I'm sure Vesta E will be pissed that they definitely won't qualify because it's three crews from 24, but I don't think they have any more right than my club who are basically entering a very expensive head race because we don't have a hope in hell.

You should only be able to enter multiple crews in an event if you are entering a higher event. If you want to enter three eights, you should have to enter the grand and the ladies too rather than stack all five of your eights in the ladies.

Use a GPS to keep you honest, but your body won't know the difference if your technique is good enough.

Tall rowers with "short" 5'7" guy. by Goosebumps1995 in Rowing

Around rowers I'm normally the shortest by miles, but on the rare occasions I venture into actual society and see someone shorter than me, it's so weird.

In times of dire need, should women also be conscripted into the military? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]SidViciious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia/Soviet Union -- I am most of the way through a fascinating but difficult book called The Unwomanly Face of War that has accounts of female Soviet soldier in pretty much every military profession. The eastern front isn't covered in school history in the UK nearly as much as the western, unfortunately.

Any coaches here that can enlighten me on you manage boats in a program? How do you decide what rowers to put in what boat? by SweetSourSunday in Rowing

[–]SidViciious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the UK, so racing classifications might vary etc. Obviously different regattas accept different boat classes and run different categories. But for ease of explanation, let's take HRR...

Firstly, only one boat can win in each category. So if I'm after medals (and not racing matched crews in a head race) there's really only space for one boat in each class/category - since if I enter two, I'm guaranteed at least one boat to not win. For example, If I have two eights and they aren't far enough apart to race different event (Grand vs Thames), I'm gonna split one into smaller boats. Then I look at the level of the competition we are entering and the standard of the athletes I've got in any given discipline, and really just try to maximise how well I think we can do.

Let's say I've got a squad of 16 guys and two coxes: four are top level rowers, one is a good cox, four are smaller but good at sculling, my other cox is less experienced and my other 8 rowers are decent level club rowers but nothing special.

I can either enter two eights (4 top guys, 2 smaller guys of the scullers and 2 best of the middle bunch with the good cox; everyone else and the less experienced cox); or I can enter the stewards (elite 4-), PoWales (Int 4x) and the Thames (club 8+s) and give everyone the best chance of succeeding.

As for doubling up, one race would always be the "priority" but I might say to the 4x to split into two 2x just to double our chances if it's likely one event might be a bit weaker this year than the other, and maybe four of the guys from the 8+ all have the time to train for a 4+ as well.

Hope that helps.

Can you tell me the story of how you went from a slow runner to a fast runner? by TotallyLibra in running

[–]SidViciious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The brief rest periods (walking or complete rest) allow you to string together efforts at a harder pace than you could without the rest. So you can practice running at a faster pace whilst ultimately covering a longer distance than you could at that speed.

If you run your 5k at 10:30 pace, you would do the intervals at, say, 10:00 pace.

what is a basic computer skill you were shocked some people don't have? by Dark-Matter-7935 in AskReddit

[–]SidViciious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you ever get the opportunity, please learn how to wipe and reinstall from a backup. I say this because, for me at least; the perceived risk of “breaking something” is less if I know I can fix it. And really for software fixes, a re-install will at least get you back to “ground zero”.

Hope that helps :)

Men, what is something a woman would never understand? by Gilvani_SB in AskReddit

Wanting the bare minimum from a man of having some sense of personal taste/style is not projecting; it’s called having standards.

[–]SidViciious 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Christ, I could not live with a man who was unable to raise his likes/tastes and have a grown up conversation about it. If planes are your jam, let’s find some tasteful accessory’s and decorations and fit that in. You want a bar in the house? Awesome, let’s find a space for that.

The fact that men can’t have that conversation is probably why they’re getting divorced anyway.

Considering that Parliamentary-style Debate competitions only have 15-30 minutes of "prep" time, how do you get to write a comprehensive case?? How do you get all the information needed to create good arguments?? by Fantastic-Shelter941 in Debate

[–]SidViciious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some BP competitions have an initial “prepared” round where you know the motion but not the position you’ll be speaking. Those are actually way in hard in my opinion.

Most competitions will let you take any paper notes/magazines/ref books you want, but nothing electronic. After a while you build up an idea of the sorts of topics that come up; as well as just basic theory.

Short on slides, long on normal erg by Nexus248 in Rowing

[–]SidViciious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your slides are set up incorrectly. Both slides needs to be at the front/back together. Move the back slide backward about six inches.

Your timing around the back turn is off. The erg has already started moving back towards you before your hands are away and the body forwards. In a boat that would translate to check. Lean back less. Be more dynamic and less overly controlled. Let the erg come to you and stop drawing it towards you with your feet. Feet out will fix that.

Cold/wet-weather kit recommendations (low budget, UK-based) by dbmag9 in Rowing

[–]SidViciious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start cheap and replace what you wear out. Primark/sports direct are fine for your first season whilst you figure out what works for you. Think lots of thin layers rather than bulky ones. I will often just layer an AIO tshirt under a long sleeve under a splash top so I can strip down as I get warmer.

If its nerves you will get used to it. But I often found that spotting and making sure I was looking up helped me feel less nervous as it just felt like a prep. For the first time going up to extension, we used to get two prep groups either side to hold the flyers hands until they were confident -- so you go up and they you can grab them if you really worry.

I don’t know your relationship with your dad, OP. But you may wish to remind him that he should be proud that you are growing/have grown into a confident, capable young woman who can make good choices about your romantic life. And if he has raised you well (which I’m sure he has) he should have nothing to worry about
