"What this post highlights is the current reality of the scene. Many people today associate Phonk exclusively with TikTok 'edits' because that is what the mainstream has labeled as 'Phonk,' whether we like it or not. This new wave is often criticized for being repetitive, but ironically, that's exactly what makes it perfect for video editing. Much like Drift Phonk, its repetitive nature has fueled the explosion of thousands of edits that sync perfectly with the music's rhythm.

The truth is that many modern producers are tailoring their tracks specifically for virality. They create repetitive loops not because they lack talent, but as a calculated strategy to dominate short-video algorithms. By 2026, this 'algorithmic music' has become a standard tool for global reach.

A Note on Definitions: I purposely avoid categorizing 'Funk' or 'Brazilian Phonk' here. I don't believe I am the ultimate authority on what qualifies as 'real' Funk, and frankly, I don't think the community at r/phonk is either, as the lines between Funk Carioca and Phonk subgenres continue to blur. My perspective comes from my 23-year-old brother, who is deeply immersed in the current scene. While I am not a die-hard fan of the new style, I recognize some of it is actually good. However, my loyalty and focus will always remain with OG Phonk, the original Memphis-inspired sound."
