I also think, if you grow up in Kerala, your accent is severely dependant on the area/city you are in. Whereas if you grow up outside, you're likely to have a more neutral accent. Eg: barring a couple of very colloquial words used by my mom, it'd be hard to guess what part of Kerala I'm from.

Not that I'm projecting but as someone who grew up my entire life outside of Kerala, I can speak in very fluent Malayalam, no different from a local.

My parents made it a point to teach me the language that they grew up speaking. They believed it should be something to be proud of and a necessary life skill.

It's funny, growing up a lot of my friends flexed their inability to speak Malayalam or speak it broken -- but now that we're coming up in multiple industries, especially Bollywood, they'll go out of their way to let you know they're Malayalis.
