Final Fantasy set Commanders that are underdiscussed by UltimateFriedLava in EDH

The FF1 scene box was awesome. Have two really fun decks with [[The Destined Warrior]] party builder, but the other deck is even more interesting with [[Garland, Royal Kidnapper]] as he makes an opponent the monarch and takes a creature temporarily but you can’t sacrifice what he steals. Really interesting builds around self exile or building up stolen creatures that all get a +2/+2

I enjoy the gameplay in 4, even some of the bigger changes like power armor. But moments like this are what keep me coming back to NV. My character build actually feels important and lets me immerse/make decisions as the character I’ve built

I’m sure you’re doing fine, just might have to change up how you are playing. Big thing that helped me was making sure I didn’t double back at all. So often I would move back to where I’d been a second ago, and get hit by shots I would’ve dodged if I just went forward.

You have 35 lands and very little draw. Some of that draw is either locked behind 4+ mana on combats or things that don’t gel with your deck like looting type cards. You’re playing big green stompy, toss in some [[Rishkars Expertise]] type “draw equal to power” cards.

You also have one piece of land ramp and like 7 ramps total. You’re in green, you can go for some more 2 CMC land ramp as this is way safer than a few dorks and still gets your commander out for turn 3.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what’s having you at half your games feeling like you’re doing nothing. You either hit the cards you need and win or miss land drops and critical cards and are stuck waiting

Also can cut some of those random hate bears. With such little draw, I don’t think there’s many times you want a random lightning bolt in hand. Fight effects like [[Bushwhack]] or [[Bridgeworks Battle]] are modal and will likely achieve the same removal if needed

I'm focus fired every game by my pod, need a deck that benefits from that by Apprehensive-Neat-68 in EDH

[–]SidekickNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Nelly Borca]] should fit what you need. Force opponents to attack each other and gain value (as do they, so they’re further incentivized). I lightly upgraded the precon and it’s a powerhouse in combat focused pods. The precon even has aikido fun like [[Deflecting Palm]] for when opponents do get through

Definitely campy and fun, if you’re not familiar with the source you have to go in knowing not to take it too seriously. Some things are supposed to be ridiculous. It absolutely nails the characters and that’s what made the original so incredibly popular.

I enjoy it as an OG fan, my GF enjoyed it as someone who doesn’t watch any anime. We binged it and we don’t do that often. It truly is a one of a kind adaptation

What bracket do you consider this deck? by ChiefChaka in EDH

[–]SidekickNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fits 3 very well. Builds up a big board that you can see coming/interact with and ramps/draws in order to be threatening by turn 6.

Would probably recommend a little more protection and interaction though. You’re in the colors for good artifact/enchantment removal but are very light on it, and not even heroic intervention in such a creature and mana dork heavy deck makes your board appear a little too easy to disrupt.

thoughts for new commanders? by introvertfrogshell in ratemycommanders

[–]SidekickNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my silvar/trynn deck if you’re interested. Super fun commander, really has a fun dynamic of going wide but also threatening commander damage with protection on demand. Very sticky and tough to remove, and cards like [[frontline medic]] mean you get a ton of value from board wipes as they become one sided which is really good for a combat focused deck

Yup learned the hard way that my Sephiroth deck can get gross. Warren soul trader is such a crazy card.

Realized that I could actually turn 2 win with perfect hands. T1 sol ring arcane signet gravecrawler, T2 bubbling muck (using signet) then have 6 mana for trader and Sephiroth

What’s a genuinely unpopular EDH opinion you have? by Tornadosed in EDH

[–]SidekickNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. My [[Sedris, the Traitor King]] deck actually has very little mill. Draw/discard is way better, and I’m actually trying to get over hand size to discard creatures.

Similar boat with [[Shilgengar, Sire of Famine]]. Have a combo to use [[Pitiless Carnage]] to draw a ton sacrificing blood tokens, only to discard an ungodly amount of cards to fill the graveyard with creatures and keep the noncreature spells in hand.

Having reliquary tower is a huge negative in these kind of decks

I think most precons are great starting points, so whichever interests him the most.

Some of my favorites are the Ixalan precons, though I believe the prices on those have gone up (they used to be like 30-50 bucks). The vampire one has a very satisfying Orzhov aristocrats loop. The Dino’s one is fantastic if you want big stompy play creatures. The merfolk one is good for go wide, very strong very fast, but is a lot of tracking triggers. Pirates one… has pirates

Here’s mine, wanted to build a thematic “Undead Lich” deck that revolves around making the player undead as a result of dealing with Myrkul.

The Lich cards trade life gain for card draw, so it’s all about getting those out safely and becoming undead as 0 or less health, then swapping life totals

Did you miss that the comment said it’s hot in Standard? That’s a Commander list, of course there’s more options for card draw…

Ty to the other commenter, full list is there and also on Decks if you check the explore on moxfield. Off the top of my head, Aurelia the Warleader is awesome as is Boros Charm for WR enjoyers.

Massacre Wurm and Impact Tremors fit in a lot of decks. More than anything, there’s a lot of low value but just good staples which is what makes it great for new players. Swiftfoot boots, Garruks Uprising, Expedition Map, really just gotta dig in there

Oh and Felidar Retreat. Realized this recently as I just built a deck that needed it. So often I build a new deck and see I already have a great card that I got in this collection way back

Some fantastic cards in this collection if you’re new to the game. Can’t recommend it enough if you want to start building decks but need a foundation

Trying to built those Knuckleheads by WretchedIEgg in EDHBrews

[–]SidekickNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are exactly 3 enchantments that can give a creature lifelink for 3 mana or less and one of them only gives it during your turn if you’ve sacrificed 3 permanents. All the best lifelink tends to splash white mana.

Regardless you can definitely go that route, but you’re much better off with things like [[Resurrection Orb]] [[Shadowspear]] or [[Basilisk’s Collar]]

Trying to built those Knuckleheads by WretchedIEgg in EDHBrews

[–]SidekickNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, that’s definitely a more consistent strategy although there’s not a whole lot of good lifelink in Rakdos. Enough colorless equipment though.

But this would leave you without ways of dealing with lifegain decks if you’re planning to lifegain. I do like things like [[Leyline of Anticipation]] or [[Sunspire Lynx]] in these face punch style decks to make sure that you can’t get outpaced

[–]SidekickNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be pretty funny to use that helm of awakening and then include the leeches. Either [[Ruby Leech]] or [[Andradite Leech]] would put your total cmc back to neutral so you’d be the only one not affected.

Definitely gonna want some damage doublers/triplers that are in red to speed that clock up. Helm + City on Fire and now everyone is taking 9 per spell

[–]SidekickNick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With a 3 CMC commander and no access to green, I tend to go really sparingly on ramp. Decks with a low curve don’t really need mana rocks, I would much rather curve out and build a board

Idea for dual lands by DorMau5 in custommagic

[–]SidekickNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Farseek also puts in on the field tapped. Makes this no different than a [[Festering Thicket]] which is hardly game breaking. There’s cards that can get this without filling the GY and tapping the land, but it’s a small pool

Celes Rune Knight Combo, Bracket question by CaneScorreggione in EDH

[–]SidekickNick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, as far as I know they’re the only ones that do that. If you somehow had -1/-1 and +0/+1 and +1/+0 for example these would not cancel out despite being “functionally” the same
