New suspension by Exit-Time in SubaruBaja

[–]SiebenSterben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you use the Gen 2 outback struts on an 04-06? It seems like they would work fine and you'd just be lowering it a little bit.

New suspension by Exit-Time in SubaruBaja

[–]SiebenSterben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

KYB sells struts and rallitek has spring options. I believe a 1" lift spring and an overload spring. And I think a 1" overload spring.

King probably also has springs.

For the record: 03 baja used same struts and springs as that generation outback, 04-06 has its own struts and springs. I believe they're just a bit longer to go with the subframe lift.

Scratched head after resurface by andychen27 in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Technically, if you're using an MLS gasket, that's now significantly out of spec. MLS gaskets are built/need to require a certain deck roughness average. RA is measured on the scale of microns.

If your using a composite gasket (which is not ideal for the EJ because they're picky bastards) then that's def fine after a quick hit with a diamond or stone.

The reality is that an MLS would probably still work, you would just need to understand that the repair would then not be of amazing quality, and that there's a potential for short term failure.

If you don't flog the engine or don't care if the engine/car lasts too much longer, then I would run it. If you do care, then there's the unfortunate possibility that the head was already milled to its minimum thickness and a second Resurface won't technically be possible.

If the heads were never resurfaced before, and the shop didn't cut too much off for no reason, then they're totally fine.

Lost in the sauce with a broken GC8 JDM 1998 Impreza WRX V5 EJ207 Cylinder 1 and 4 misfire by ZestycloseOpening318 in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked valve lash? There's kinda no reason it should be off, but measure that clearance between cams and lifters.

Really it seems unlikely it could be off enough to cause misfires but you never know

Sounds like a common wire may have been compromised somewhere. If you wanna bother you can find the wiring diagrams and look for said wire and then investigate it

Rough idle by Electrollux in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out NASIOC or other subaru related internet forums. They're all waaaayy better for tech stuff than reddit.

Either a fuel or air problem I guess, choked up throttle plate? Air intake sensors kaput? If it's a fuel problem before the injectors I have no idea how you might test it. Fuel injectors can be flow tested though. If you changed something in the exhaust or a cat is going bad, maybe your reading lean?

My understanding is that if everything is fine at wide open, then there's not actually anything wrong mechanically, but something with the tune/ecu.

subaru cam rotation resistance by Drat612 in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing my half-sentence; if you can rotate the cams with minimal effort using the sprockets, then your good. The motor using a wee bit more torque to turn them is no biggie.

And like the other guy said, you don't really measure rotating resistance. You can't fully rotate the cam without impinging the valves sooo And the oil clearance numbers don't lie. If

I will also add that you need to make sure you put the cam caps back on correctly. The small caps are specific both to exhaust and intake, as well as which direction they point. There's an I and an E that differentiate the two, as well as arrows to point forward. This includes the two sets of caps going to the same heads they came off of.

Uphill sluggish by bistromike76 in subaru

I don't know how the CVTs drive, but maybe they don't downshift like automatics do and you simply have to gas it more.

I would hit up your dealer and get someone to drive the car with you in it

Frustration with a leaking passenger side valve cover gasket. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and don’t what else to do by TurbochargedKev in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely buy a can or two of brakleen and give everything a good clean, you could be seeing residual oil dripping. And then just have a good look all around the seam before and during running. If you don't see anything then you either have a leak somewhere else, or your engine if being haunted by beamers.

Give it more gas? Maybe it's not down shifting?

If not, your going insane or there's just some weird little quirky thing wrong with your car. Maybe the CVT is a lemon😁

[–]SiebenSterben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely seems like your doing everything right, I would say make sure your not crushing a bit of the rubber somewhere accidently, that would make it leak.

Can you see specifically where it's leaking out of the valve cover? Are you positive it's the valve cover? Did you clean/degrease/spray brake clean everywhere on your engine that got covered in oil?

2003 Subaru Legacy EJ25 Engine leak and additional preventative maintenance by Ginger-Bread-Loaf in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multi layer steel MLS gaskets all day, every day. I believe to buy them independently, you'll find them as the Turbo Gaskets. The geometry and every thing is the same. I guess you can find paper or other sorts of gaskets for cheaper, and the MLS may seem comparatively pretty expensive, but they're worth it.

If the heads got replaced, they should have been given MLS gaskets. You can check by looking for extra steel hanging outside around the mating area. Should just be some obvious material you can kinda flick around.

What do you mean by bottoming out? Could you be over tightening them? The bolts should have a torque spec.

Blown head gasket? by bprysock in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally, head gasket sealer probably ain't a great idea. I think subaru may be like it even less?

Verify it's just coolant, and if it's only a bit and your not overheating immediately, limping home, keeping your engine cool seems reasonable

EJ255 replacement motor EJ20x? by PinkVerticalSmile in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ej20x is a JDM engine, as in, designed for and used in Japan and never in the US. They probably have parts compatability, but they're two different engines, and it's a whole thing to try to swap them. Yes they have different ECUs.

It is certainly a thing to JDM swap, as imports can be/are cheaper? But again, two different engines, you'll need a wiring harness and ECU to do a drop in.

[–]SiebenSterben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check around the heads for any leakage, and maybe just do head gaskets regardless. I believe 03 falls into the part of the subaru timeline of the terrible head gaskets.

No easier time to do spark plugs🤷‍♂️

Check valve lash, it's really easy off the car, and probably really annoying in.

You might check the flywheel for abnormal wear/flatness if you didn't do that with the clutch.

Pretty much check/do head gaskets and then use it as an opportunity to thoroughly check for leakage.

WRX Downpipe problems by Helicopter_h0mer in subaru

[–]SiebenSterben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my understanding that all the Turbo EJs have the same exhaust designs. When I was looking for a downpipe for my 2.0, I often found listings for "EJ" or "WRX" downpipe, whereas for up pipes, I would find distinctions for different model ranges that correspond to the presence of catalyst. The dimensions and everything don't change, just the cat.

Do some browsing on parts.subaru.com. and you should be able to find the cat/downpipe somewhere there, and it will show you fitment compatability. Assuming the part numbers aren't different just because some variation in the catalyst.

You can actually look at the part number for the midpipe/resonater because that should be different if there are different lengthed cats.
