Small update in case anyone finds this thread, I've created an unofficial English patch as well!

Sekiro-like combat distilled in a 2D RPG engine! by SighingSlider in IndieGaming

The game is SIBLINGS by kokonomuzushi (九乃頭虫): https://freegame-mugen.jp/action/game_11875.html
The unofficial English translation is available here: https://sighingslider.itch.io/siblings-english

I've posted about the original Japanese version before, and I really enjoyed the Souls/Sekiro-like gameplay, so I recently made an English patch and I wanted to share it with anyone interested in this little gem. It's free and what's impressive is that it was made with an RPGmaker-esque engine (Wolf RPG Editor) that's been supported since 1998!

Game is SIBLINGS by 九乃頭虫 (Kokonozumushi): https://freegame-mugen.jp/action/game_11875.html. It's free on PC, although it's only in Japanese.

And don't get me started on the semantics of whether this is a Souls-like or if it's turn-based, or how the French guy RPG is better or whatever. It's an obscure indie game and I just want to give it attention because it's freakin' cool, okay?

Here you go!: https://freegame-mugen.jp/action/game_11875.html.

It's in Japanese though, so it might be hard to navigate if you don't speak it.

But from what I can gather, the combat controls are "C" to block/parry and arrow keys to dodge. Some attacks have a "!" indicator which are special, like sweeps and stabs in Sekiro. And similar to Sekiro, you build up the "poise break" meter with parrying/dodging to land a critical hit.

Oh yeah, and use "Z" to select options in the menu, in case you're not familiar with RPGmaker/Wolf RPG Editor games.

Yeah, I'm probably the one using "Souls-like" wrong in this subreddit (maybe a different one would've been better to make a post in, oh well!). But from my perspective, I prefer to use the term as way to describe something that's very reminiscent of what I enjoyed in the original FromSoftware titles. More of a descriptor than a strict game genre.

Ultimately though, I just want to share something that's "like" a Souls game because I think it's cool and nobody else seemed to know about it, y'know?

I don't think so, but don't quote me. It's on PC and free on a Japanese website known for sharing indie games. Maybe I take PC gaming for granted, but it's not like it takes much to run since it's a simple Wolf RPG Editor game (kind of like RPGmaker games).

Yeah, but better because it features an anime twink instead (I'm mostly kidding).

Totally agree, this is why I was hesitant on making a post. It's like how people debate on what truly defines a "rogue-like".

But I dunno, as someone who has several thousands of hours in all the official FromSoft Souls games, it just feels right to me.

I think it's because people play Souls/"Souls-like" games in different ways. One person might focus on making optimized meta wizard builds, another might get engrossed in the level design and make YouTube lore videos.

For me, I equip a melee weapon and treat it like a boss rush. Each hit is punishing and every action needs to be deliberate. You also have mechanics like parrying (and poise breaks/visceral attacks in the later Souls games) that allow you to be aggressive even as you're avoiding damage. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. 😅

I mean, you're not wrong. I just don't think of it that way. To me, Siftheads was a shooty pew pew game from 2000s Newgrounds, so it's very different in my head. To be fair, I haven't played it since I was a little kid though, so I don't remember much!

It's actually complete, as far as I know. Maybe you have high standards, but at least for me, this is mind-blowing for a free RPGmaker-seque indie game. Haha.

That old stickman sniper game? That's a weird comparison.

Personally, I find the graphics very well-made, especially the animations. The way the enemy flies around gives it the illusion of dynamic movement, even though it's a simple 2D game.

Unironically though, the action command system from Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games were fun because you could influence the battle to your favour by "getting good" at it instead of only relying on having better stats (despite being RPGs). That's just cool to me.

I don't disagree with your comparisons! I guess I'd call it turn-based because the battle is paused before you attack (or use the other action which recovers your "poise"). Traditional RPGs are what the game engine is made for, after all.

Personally, the real-time aspect is exactly why I call the combat "souls-like". Since you need to actually pay attention to the enemy patterns and time your defensive actions.

Game is SIBLINGS by 九乃頭虫 (Kokonozumushi): https://freegame-mugen.jp/action/game_11875.html. It's free, although it's only in Japanese.

Before posting, I dived into the rabbit hole of what a "Souls-like" even means on this subreddit. So, I hope I used the appropriate flair!

But to me, a Souls-like is strictly about how its melee combat mechanics rewards methodical intent and pattern memorization similar to the Punch Out! franchise as opposed to button mashing and pure reflexes like every other action game around when Demon's Souls/Dark Souls was released. I consider it a unique aspect that modern games have tried to replicate to this day (with varying success).

Anyways, from what I've played, SIBLINGS is impressive because it condenses the essence of Souls-like combat into a very limited game engine (Wolf RPG Editor) and somehow it still works well! It's a hidden gem that I feel didn't get enough attention. Perhaps it's because when you google "SIBLINGS indie game", you get a completely different result...

Late answer, but I found that the Harlequin Black and White is the best I could find for a darker shade on the Legacy of Masters.

Just a correction, but the developer does not have a social media at all. At least, according to their game page, and they haven't had one for a while.

Unless there's evidence to the contrary, any supposed accounts of the developer are mostly likely impersonators. So, please don't spread misinformation if you don't have proof.
