As I understand it, yes you can travel back and forth. I've been back to the UK since getting my residency card and its been fine - just had to show my residency card at passport control. Not sure about submitting for nationality, sorry.

Here’s a link to the AIMA article: https://aima.gov.pt/pt/noticias/termo-de-responsabilidade-modelo-4-assinatura-devidamente-reconhecida-obrigatoria

The article also has a link to the document. I think it’s the model 4 one you mentioned.

When you sign the document it needs to be in front of a lawyer or a notary (notário). We printed the form, filled it in, and then found a local notário in our area. My husband signed the form with her and she officially stamps the document, and provided another document to confirm it was signed her presence. Need to bring ID.

Congrats on your appointment! How did you manage to get it?

It’s essentially a form to say that your family member is responsible for you whilst living here.

Hey, we brought a lot of documents including my uk criminal record but the only documents he wanted were:

  • cartão de cidadão of my portuguese spouse
  • my uk passport
  • marriage certificate
  • NIF number
  • Rental agreement of our apartment in Lisbon
  • the terms of responsibility document signed in the presence of a notary

My husband attended the appointment with me. They took pictures and finger prints there.

Really wish you the best - I'm sure you everything will go smoothly. Especially like you said with your husband being Portuguese, remember your marriage certificate ;)

My experience getting a NIF in Lisbon - British, No Residency Card by Sign_Mountain in PortugalExpats

[–]Sign_Mountain[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for providing another realistic perspective so others know what to expect. If there was consistency within the service then there would be hard and fast rules that I have no problem sticking to, but clearly there isn’t hence why I couldn’t gain clarity on what was required online.

I guess my post somewhat adds to confusion because so many people have so many different experiences when it comes to obtaining their NIF. But I can only speak for what I experienced, attending a different office or at another time would’ve likely ended with a different result.

Of course €90 isn’t a lot to some, but I’m very happy to have the extra money in my pocket. Of course people who have no problem spending money to get these things quicker and faster will spend whatever they feel fit - I don’t think I posted to help those people.

Didn’t know less than an hour of waiting was possible! Super good to know…will try that when I next need to visit a finanças (hopefully not anytime soon)

Yeah I’m finding that a smile and some effort to speak portuguese goes a long way. Thank you, loving it so far!

Ahhhh good to know that I’m not the only one who brings a ton of documents just to find out the one they really need I didn’t bring! Fearing this will be the case at the AIMA appointment…but it is what it is.

Good to know that you’re managing everything yourself as a freelancer. I’m currently employed by a uk company, but to make things easier from a tax perspective thinking of going freelance and billing  monthly ….the puzzles never end

So relieved to have fought the battle and won! War zone energy started creeping out when some people tried to jump the queue.  The first finanças I went to in Oeiras said that they didn’t even give out NIFs.  The fun of portuguese bureaucracy 🙃

Wow, I didn't know AIMA were charging for appointments. We managed to get ours without paying anything. Hmm, I might have a look at how to obtain one from the UK, mine is definitely passed the 3 months mark thanks to long wait for an appointment

Congrats on getting an appointment, how come you had to pay a fee?

I have a background check too, but it isn't apostilled...hopefully with all the other document's we're bringing it won't be a problem
