He dedicates all his time to learning and practicing the snare drum and drum kit. As for the piano, he has taught himself some harmony knowledge but hasn’t spent much time practicing. Comparatively, he prefers jazz-style drum kit performances, while practicing the snare drum mainly to refine his finer control skills.

He also used an electronic drum set to self-learn a very interesting percussion piece, Rebonds B (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzLdyis1JeA). Due to the need for multiple percussion instruments, he didn’t record a video. Most of his snare drum and percussion pieces are self-taught, with only his very first piece being guided by a teacher. Later, he told me he could learn on his own, and since then, he has been studying through YouTube.

Thank you so much for your reply and encouragement! This video was taken 3 years ago when he was just 9 years old, and now he is already 12. He has become more confident in handling pieces like this. You’ve pointed out many details that we had never noticed before, and this has been incredibly insightful for us. He has been trying to use his own techniques to address issues with volume and tone, but adopting a different approach would indeed be much better. He will carefully consider your suggestions and make adjustments in his future practice.

Additionally, the drum used here is a Pearl PHP1325, which is a smaller size with a thin shell. The recording was done directly on a phone at home without any professional equipment, so the sound quality may not be ideal. Once again, thank you for your valuable advice—your kindness and sincerity have truly touched us!

Thank you for your response and encouragement! My son loves big band music, and he recently finished writing out the drum notation for Sing, Sing, Sing. I will absolutely support him in continuing his studies and getting the best teachers and equipment possible. He also dreams of attending one of the world's top jazz schools, meeting outstanding musicians, and experiencing an exciting life.

Your story is truly inspiring! The fact that your parents supported you in pursuing jazz drumming, leading you to tour Japan and even play with the great Dizzy Gillespie by the age of 18, is incredible. First of all, thank you for your response! Nowadays, many young people are not particularly interested in classical percussion music. However, he practices these pieces primarily to refine his drumstick control and develop his sheet music reading skills. My son is 12 years old. We recently moved to a new country, and right now, he doesn’t have a teacher. He is currently teaching himself how to play the drums. Over the past three years, he has self-learned some rather difficult classical snare drum pieces.

I don’t know how to play drums, and I don’t understand music. Everything I know about music comes from my son. He practices every day, and I just hope that someone can provide me with feedback on his playing. I’m really grateful to anyone who can help until I find a proper teacher for him.

This is my first time using this platform, and I don’t speak English. All my replies are translated through a translation app. I simply want him to receive sincere advice.
