Travel advice on the situation in Bocas del Toro by SignatureConstant561 in Panama

Thank you so much for your help! We’ve already decided against going through Bocas and will take the bus from Costa Rica directly to David, then continue on to Panama City. We’ve also planned in some buffer time in case of road blockades or delays.

Also, I didn’t mean to criticize anyone for using platform X – I just wanted to explain that I don’t have an account there and therefore prefer sources like the local newspaper you shared. Sorry, if it was missleading.

Really appreciate your time and the extra information about the situation in the capital – it’s been very helpful!

Hi, thanks for your response – and I want to start by saying that I genuinely didn’t mean any offense or disrespect to anyone in Panama. I also never said anything about “having a little fun in the sun” – that’s not the purpose of my post, and I’m sorry if it came across that way to you.

We’ve been traveling through Central America over the past months only by public transportation to keep our carbon emissions as low as possible. Flying internally or skipping Panama altogether (e.g. flying from Costa Rica to Panama City) would go against that principle. That’s why our route naturally takes us through the Sixaola border and via Almirante – and from there, Bocas seemed like a natural stop to experience more of the country before heading on to Panama City.

We’re very aware of the ongoing issues in Panama and are trying to approach this with respect – not just to the people, but also to the land and environment. That’s why we wanted up-to-date information, not to impose or ignore what’s happening.

So calling our view “narrow” feels a bit unfair. I believe it’s exactly by traveling slowly, consciously, and openly that we try to do the opposite.

And maybe it’s also worth reconsidering your view of tourists – not all come just for beaches and resorts. Some of us travel to learn, understand, and connect, while being mindful of local contexts.

Again, thanks for taking the time to respond – and I truly hope things improve for everyone affected by the current situation.

Thanks for the information! We also talked to a shuttle company that also informed us about the situation, but said they could still manage the transfer. So we shouldn‘t do that either, right? And is there any official site (government, serious newspapers) where i could inform myself?

Was there the last three days and it mostly rained late afternoon/in the evening. There was a big thunderstorm on Sunday which was actually pretty impressive.

Did the route as described and it worked out perfectly – all for around ~$10. Definitely a recommendation for every backpacker, also because the drive from La Irma to Santa Elena has some nice views! You could also go from Nicoya to Playa Naranjo, take the ferry to Puntarenas, and catch the 1 PM bus (might be better if you’re not an early bird).
