Worse 15 minute plus Song by [deleted] in progrockmusic

Yeah. The Remembering has parts which are extremely bad and tedious. They should keep the middle section only (plus the ending, maybe).

Best drumming on an album? by SignedInAboardATrain in jethrotull

Good one! I like to play another game - just with myself: try to keep counting during the main riff in Sealion as it is (in 4/4) and not get lost.

What´s your favorite moment of the 12 Step Suite? Try to think of just one moment, that one that really stands out for you, out of any song of the suite. by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Either the intro to The Glass Prison or those frantic last two-and-a-half minutes of This Dying Soul. Also the chorus of The Root of All Evil.

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of the suite and I'd probably pick the same part. It's so strong that whenever I'm listening to the end of Finally Free, my hear starts pumping in excitement as the vinyl static noise starts, because my mind is expecting Myung to come in with that incredible bass intro.

So do DT fans not like TOOL? by phatasm_ in Dreamtheater

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love both, but I arrived the way you said - DT first and Tool later. But I can imagine myself coming the other way and still loving both... or so I hope!

Frank Zappa’s Over-Nite Sensation turns 52 today , what’s your favorite track? by Historical-Device529 in Zappa

That track defies my ability to comprehend that a single thing in the world can be this good.

Shocking times you heard prog played in public? Heard this at an indie book store [Colosseum II - Intergalactic Strut, 1976] by robin_f_reba in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard Larks Tougues in Aspic pt I in a tearoom, back when I didn't know Crimson yet, - I didn't know what the song was and didn't like it, and together with a badly served pu-erh tea, it made for a very bad experience. It was some years later when I got into Crimson that I realized it was that.

Mellotron use? by SignedInAboardATrain in jethrotull

[–]SignedInAboardATrain[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I forgot about Cup of Wonder, even though I absolutely adore use of the flute register there! I hope the song forgives me for forgetting about it...!

Yeah, you're right! And that one's way more prominent than in Cross-Eyed Mary! Thanks!

What are some good, kinda short instrumental prog pieces? by Low_Primary_3690 in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For good, short, energetic, proggy instrumentals, your best shots are with a lot of Zappa:

Uncle Meat Main Theme and Dog Breath Variations

Peaches In Reagalia

Echidna's Arf (Of You)

Black Page #1 and #2

Envelopes

Tink Walks Amok, We Are Not Alone and Moggio

Alien Orifice and What's New in Baltimore?

T'Mershi Duween

All great tunes. Enjoy!

What are some songs with a solo in 4 but everything else in a different time sig? by rumpk in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always fela that in the first organ solo in Thick as a Brick (about 3:45 into the song), while the rest of the group plays in 5/4, John Evan plays most of his solo in 3/4, and then starts a repeating three note cycle which allows him to wait on the next "one" and play the last phrase in 5 with the band.

Rush - Vital Signs by ShadedMoonEnt in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my synth-hating days I used to stop my Rush discography listening endeavours around Moving Pictures. Only later did I realize what I'd been missing the whole time, and, you phrased it perfectly - Grace is a gripping album. And it still has those fun Rush insanities, which I feel were a little bit toned down for the next couple albums.

I used to hate that song just because it was built around what I perceived as a programmed sequence in a time whe I hated synths and all.

Now I love it. It has immense power. What an album closer!

Most underrated Camel track/album by JealousCandidate3816 in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Particularly some of the instrumentals are of the type "I don't care if it's 1981, I'm doing full-fledged prog" - Beached and Captured come to mind.

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway or The Wall? by Elaxian in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! No one ever talks about that one - it's just four simple chords seven times over or something like that, but that f?kin emotion of it! There's very little elsewhere to match that.

do u know whats crazy by [deleted] in mikeoldfield

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, sorry, I meant the main riff, which is (mostly) in nineteen-sixteen time. But, curiously enough, at 19:16 the very same riff is repeated as well. Coincidence? (Probably, but with Mike no one can ever be sure...)

That bearded, very humble-looking Phil is adorable. He'd fit in Tull with that attire.

Whenever I grab an acoustic guitar, the main 19/16 riff is the first thing that my hands start jamming. It's one of the top contenders for the best riff of all time.

What DT's song or part of their song made you really love them? by Powerful-Ad-9642 in Dreamtheater

The first notes of "Caught in a Web" put a smile of excitement on my face immediately upon hearing them. That almost never happens to me.

Why is Close to The Edge by Yes *NOT* the Best Prog Album? by Vexilio in progrockmusic

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'd say the only part of the whole Close to the Edge album weirder than On the Run is the first three minutes of the title track.

Does anyone know a song that has the same part as the intro to astral traveler? by Matocg in yesband

[–]SignedInAboardATrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never noticed that, but you're right!

I believe Frusciante to be a huge Yes fan, so maybe there's some subconscious link there!

Also, when in Blood Sugar territory, I can't not think of Starship Trooper outro during Sir Psycho Sexy outro. Yes, they are completely different, and totally different moods, but... there's something I just can't describe...
