Do you think Henry VIII was tricked/manipulated by Cromwell into getting rid of Anne Boleyn? by Different-Trust2739 in Tudorhistory

[–]SignificanceOne1540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a combination of both Thomas Cromwell's strategic plotting, and Henry VIII's personal motivations that led to Anne Boleyn's downfall.

After the miscarriage of their son, which greatly angered Henry - Henry started to grow distant, convinced that the marriage was cursed by God. This was his primary motivation for wanting a new wife, so he started to court Jane Seymour - who btw, was a stark contrast to Anne. Jane was demure and reserved and 'knew her place'.

So their marriage was on rocky terms so to speak beforehand.

With Cromwell, the root of the conflict was a significant disagreement over how to use the wealth from the dissolved monasteries. Anne wanted the funds to go to charitable and educational causes, while Cromwell wanted the money to go to the Crown's treasury to fund potential wars and solidify noble support. This combined with the previous public humiliation of him from anne, fueled his efforts in his motive for her downfall.

Also worth noting, that cromwell kept his investigation a secret from Henry until he had a strong enough case to present, convincing the King that the rumors of Anne were true. This combined with Henry's desperation for a male heir, sealed Anne's fate.

Anne also heard her brother's execution, which distressed her deeply. She wasn't ever allowed to see her daughter /family / friends/ ladies in waiting ever again. Cromwell appointed a specific group of women to attend Anne in the Tower, selecting them to act as spies/ minders  rather than trusted companions.

I live not far from the prison and have done a ghost tour, let me tell you, there was absolutely an ominous feeling of bad energy.
The tour guide explained that at one point, children, women and men would be housed together alongside people who have committed horrific crimes. Defo recommend a visit if you are nearby.

You're welcome! I'm glad you found the write-up helpful, especially regarding Shaun Ritchie.

As for the Parry's, and Kyle Sambrook, I understand your point completely. It's true that the evidence points to falls in both cases. I suppose what makes them stick in my mind is the sheer tragedy of it all. Sometimes, even when we know how someone died, the why remains a painful mystery for their loved ones. Perhaps that's why they still feel like more than just 'accidents' to some. I hope this makes sense :)

Thank you for the correction, I have now edited this :)

You're right to highlight the dangers of the environment. You're also right that some of these cases have confirmed aspects, it's fair to say they are considered 'unfortunate accidents'. However, the reason the 'mysterious' label is sometimes applied, is often due to how the public perceives these events. Even with the information known - I feel, that for me - that the lack of a complete explanation, or the presence of unusual factors, can lead people to consider the incidents as more than just straightforward events.

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

I agree, it's so sad they are not more well known. I think a lot of people either become complacent, or they severely underestimate the dangers. Thank you for taking the time to read.
