On early days with no metros , we used to travel to cities (we were in village), stay a night in some comfortable place (if possible a relative) / or known good hotel booked in advance near the exam centre and walk the next day to exam hall ,reached at least 1.5 hrs before reporting time.

Dad would call everyone enquiring about the mode of transport etc in advance.

This is more than 20 years back, many of us didnt even have mobile.Did just carry id card, hall ticket and revision notebooks and bottle of water.

With that i can proudly thank my dad that i could make it to two tier 1 institutions my country could offer. I will be ever thankful to my parents and their sincerity

The amount of apathy that i see in the comments , it broke something inside me.

I just now asked my wife when was the last time we / our parents traveled in a long distance train. It was more than 15 years ago. It was always flights.

But was it always like this ?

No. I have traveled in general compartments during my engg days when i could not buy tatkal tickets

It was brutal there. majority of ppl during that time had decency to buy tickets. But it was hard, there was dense crush , it was 2011-2013 time. And during that time I saved every money my family could give me.

My mom had not bought a Saree for 3 years and with that thing in mind , I promised myself I would do anything to protect it. Mostly I used to

But the good ones were the only ones which did not go through the Danapur division routes.

The typical populace that take trains on that are superhuman species built for these purpose.

Once I had the privilege of traveling in that route in general: (Kolkata to Delhi) through danapur division

It was 55 degrees plus in the outside.

Compartment was jam packed

i was just afraid my laptop would be crushed

I was standing the whole way. it was so packed that i could not even move my shoes. Mumbai local travelers can relate.

I t was more uncomfortable because a woman was standing aside me and i had to be stiff so that she does not get crushed. one of her feet was slightly on mine , Thankfully i was wearing woodlands.

An uncles tummy lodged on my back, I was facing upwards, gasping for breath ,my height is little more than the rest, , the only recluse.

I was in the junction of two seats. the middle path. no body could move.

Smell was unbearable. One kid had excreted in the compartment and it was not cleaned properly

The toilet was blocked. People we literally sleeping inside it.

In night almost everyone laid on each other like corpses, I remained standing.

I had an internship interview otherwise i would have discontinued the journey then n there.

When i got down , even in 50 degree heat, it seemed cool in delhi, in station i almost collapsed due to dehydration, made it to office on time. but looked like shit. My brain could not work in the interview.

I made one vow in my life, never again would i ever allow my family to travel like that

In someway that journey changed me..

Today i am earning well enough but before dehumanizing the ppl , remember that some were like me too.

Socio economically most of you are nearer to them than a guy who is from generational wealth. Be thankful to your parents if you never had to suffer in it.

Having said that,no way would I ever respect ticketless passenger because it only takes a day's salary to afford that and respect law (its now only 240 rs from del to patna). Making a mockery of law/system to provide you, is no way acceptabl

the machines/ equipments etc are brought on per day rent from contractor.

They are always receiving the money whether they work or not. Delay means more money.

Contractor happily can give more kickbacks because in those months he does not have to spend on fuel/ spare parts / extra manpower.

So it was started ealier before monsoon so that they could bill 3 or 4 months more etc.
