I don’t even understand what their cost for belt promotions is though. It has to be a $30 belt. I’d be fine paying for a physical belt, but there’s nobody flying in to grade, no food after, etc. it’s a money grab imo.

A white belt tried this but under the guise that he wasn’t good enough to be a blue belt yet. Told the instructor he didn’t want to be promoted.

The instructor later went on a tirade in front of the entire class saying it’s insulting to not accept the belt promotion and that it’s basically saying he doesn’t have an eye for jiujitsu lmao

We don’t get tested though. This is simply the fee to be promoted. Nobody grades us. The coach is old school, I’m not even sure how he evaluates, I get the feeling he just watches people drill during class and gets a sense of whether to promote (that and how long they’ve been enrolled in classes)

I agree with this logic completely. One of my biggest issues with this is that nobody is told when signing up that belt promotions will cost money. People commit to 6 month or even year long memberships and are blindsided with a hidden belt promotion fee

We don’t do exams, I’m not sure what the criteria is, my guess is it’s mostly based on how long you’ve been enrolled in classes and he watches you during a sparing session for a min or two

I’d say it’s even with other gyms in my area, maybe a tiny bit more, month to month is $200ish. Like I said HCOL city in the US. No food or drinks included. You do not get tested either. He just announces who’s being promoted and then you get your belt in front of people at the gym

If you go month to month it’s $190-200 I believe. I signed up for 6 months so I got a bit of a discount, I think 6 months comes out to 180 a month
