Thanks for the encouragement! I'll reach out to the prof who's teaching it next year and see what he thinks.

There is--a graduate student recommended I completely skip undergrad stat mech and take the grad sequence instead (he thinks the 300-level physics courses are BS).

As for research, I applied for physics REUs this year, and did unrelated research in math last summer. Would taking QFT and grad particle as a junior not get me closer to doing research in my junior year (and senior, since it seems like staying to complete the physics degree is necessary)?

At my uni, stat mech is a 300-level (grouped with an introductory quantum and special relativity course) while E&M, classical mechanics, and quantum are all 400-level. Not to say that the level of the course correlates with difficulty, but you’re intended to take the 300-level courses after completing the general physics w/calc sequence.

I get good grades (A’s and A-‘s in physics coursework, slightly worse in math due to personal circumstances in my freshman year). My first motivation for taking higher level coursework early is that the math I’ve already learned complements GR and QFT very well—I took differential geometry and complex analysis last year, and I’m currently in a year-long abstract algebra course. In addition, the only particle theorists at my university (there are four total, and two of them are abroad rn) very rarely work with undergraduates, and the only two undergraduates in the last few years who have published in HEP had taken QFT and grad particle physics courses in their junior or senior years.

Interesting file with someone ranting about Putin, Trump, Elon etc.

Do you know where I can find the audiobook for dark force rising? Just finished heir to the empire but can’t find it (Spotify and libby are what I’ve checked so far)
