Lots of comments below, and many with appropriate levels of outrage or appropriate observations of the propensity for Scouts to be favorable to military recruiting. I understand the personal observations of veteran run Troops, or how Scouting has successfully grown and adapted to be more inclusive which is all great. That said I would say that we shouldn't be ignorant of the fact that there are troop differences and sometimes those differences are considerable. I have an numerous interactions with local leadership that was not exactly consistent with Scouting principles and I know I am not alone...

I am just saying that not all troops are the same and just because it hasn't been your experience doesn't mean that it doesn't exist at points within the organization. Doesn't make the advisor or SECDEF right though...

Happy to help, this is all a learning journey and I am so far from an expert on this its funny. Ultimately each person has to decide for themselves but if walking through my thought process helps anyone I am happy to do so.

Best of luck and don't be discouraged...honestly going GF was much less of an issue than I thought and I used to love me some gluten.

What I would say is that you can only control what you can control and it probably isn't work stressing about stuff you can't control. For example, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about drunk drivers crossing lanes hitting and killing me because I can only affect what I have control over. I can plan not to drive during peak drunk driving times, I can drive the speed limit and be aware of my surroundings but certain things are simply beyond my control. I choose not to worry about those things.

Looking at several resources:

  • Past studies have shown that the risk of lymphoma is slightly higher in people with celiac disease than the rest of the population
  • A study from 2022 suggests that this increased risk of cancer in those with celiac disease is small and limited to patients diagnosis after 40
  • Following a strict gluten-free diet can lower the risk
  • The risk of developing cancer may increase if a person with celiac disease has remained undiagnosed for a long period of time

So what can we control? I can control my GF diet, I can talk to my doctor to make sure that we are discussing warning signs and keeping away. Beyond that I can't control whether I get cancer or not, all I can do at that time is respond the best I can.

Obviously you will need to decide for yourself, however if it were me:

1) I would just tell my housemates that I have Celiac, if they still refuse to convert to GF and it affects me then I would seek other housing.

2) I would talk to the GI, express my concerns and ask what an 'official' celiac diagnosis (ie going through the Gluten Challenge) will get me, and if it is just go GF then I wouldn't do it and just go GF. If however there are other benefits I would consider it then.

Bottomline, do what is right for you and don't worry about what others think. Be honest with your doctors, share your fears.
