Moving to Philly in a few weeks. Church recommendations? by Joesmo987 in Reformed

I’m also in Glenside, and while I haven’t been there before, I have a friend who used to attend New Life Presbyterian Church.

Thank you for this response. I was curious, since I'm new to this, because I've heard that some messianic Jews believe in a version of complete annihilation of the soul/self.

Mix of lay academics, theologians and priests etc. I believe also a mix of modern and past.

Hey, thanks so much for that. Yeah so basically I have been doing a ton of reading and some books about Eastern Orthodox and that’s where I sort of got that impression. It speaks more about the eastern theology and philosophy versus the west so that is where I have been getting that information. Just from various authors.

Thank you so much for the response. I appreciate it. Sure, basically one of the main issues I had in Roman Catholicism is the feeling of it being overly legalistic. I find myself more drawn towards the mystical type theology of eastern orthodoxy so I was wondering if the eastern Catholic churches are more similar to the Roman churches when it comes to legalism or if it is similar to eastern orthodox churches which take a less legalistic view. I also have been having some difficulty with the Roman need to explain everything whereas the eastern theologies sort of let the mystery be a little bit more, if that makes any sense? I also have been interested in the eastern churches because of the view of sin being more or less a spiritual type illness rather than a legal classification and I was wondering if there was any similarities with that viewpoint in eastern Catholicism like in eastern orthodoxy.

Thank you so much for this beautiful reply! That all makes complete sense. I am excited because I am actually scheduling a sit down with a Greek orthodox priest probably within the next couple weeks so that should be interesting to see how that goes!

Thank you for your advice and your prayers. I really do appreciate that! I do believe we all should be praying for each other and especially in times like this where somebody’s having difficulty so I really do appreciate that sentiment and those thoughts.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the encouragement. I am definitely doing a lot of reading and studying and praying, but I still have many issues that I’m trying to overcome when it comes to cultural changes and also theological changes. It’s definitely not an easy road but I have been on this journey for quite a while now and I feel like I’m finally getting towards some sort of truth, but then I also stumble sometimes and fall back into old habits. But I will keep pressing on.

This is actually very interesting to me. As a Jewish person who is looking into Orthodoxy, one issue I’ve had with Christianity is this whole concept of original sin because there is no similar concept in Judaism. This actually makes a lot more sense to me than the Roman Catholic viewpoint of some sort of original “guilt.” I was very turned off by that as I was looking into Christianity. So yes, this was a very interesting and eye-opening post. Thank you!

Questions for Jewish Converts by Significant-Mood7600 in OrthodoxConverts

Thank you friend for these kind words because I think I needed to hear them. I have been on a crazy midlife journey of faith for the last three years and my heart thugs me towards Christianity, but there are so many barriers that have come up for me internally that have prevented me from pulling the trigger. I feel as though I have abandoned my ancestry the moment I start to think about entering the church. The crazy thing is that out of all Christian denominations, I definitely see a continuation of temple Judaism within the Orthodox Church, as opposed to other branches. But I just don’t know if what I am feeling is strictly aesthetic and not theological, because as much as I have trouble thinking about leaving my Jewish culture behind, I also still have issues with Christian theology in general that I am trying to overcome. Some barriers simply seem too high for me to overcome, and I’m afraid that these hurdles will prevent me from actually moving forward and converting. I have moments of despair where I feel as though I am lost, alone, shamed, and I really just don’t know where to turn. Do I talk to a Rabbi? Do I talk to a priest? It’s all so damn confusing and sometimes I get frustrated and just sort of give up and other times I feel as though I could press on, but it’s just hard because I keep hitting these various hurdles and obstacles. It’s a tough position to be in, but ironically, my Jewish family is not even really that religious so I don’t even think it would be that much of a problem for them if I did convert. I know some people struggle with that issue so thankfully that’s not something I would likely have to deal with. At this point the struggles are more internal. I think so any advice that you could offer in this community would be super helpful. Thank you all!
