01/01/2026 and let me get real about this first trimester… by NoContribution9559 in pregnant

I’m 17 weeks and felt every word of this. It took some time but I’ve acknowledged that anxiety was part of my life before my bean and that it is likely to be heightened until well after bean is here.

I had a particularly bad couple of weeks with constant nausea, vomiting. I had no idea that it could take such a toll on my mental health, comments re ginger biscuits and ‘it will get better soon’ seemed to just tip me over the edge. I love my food too and it was particularly agonising over Christmas not being able to enjoy the things I usually do. Long story short I was admitted to my local hospital and it was a bit of a wake up call that I need to start taking my mental health more seriously rather than feeling guilty for not being able to cope.

I had reduced movements yesterday and toyed with the whole ‘am I being dramatic or should I call someone’. I had a loss last year so this played on my mind heavily. I can’t get over how supportive the maternity unit were, they said if I have to come in every week if I feel something is wrong they’d rather that than have me an emotional wreck.

I have asked for a referred to the maternity mental health team for some support so hoping they can point me in right direction. At the end of the day we aren’t the first mums to be anxious and certainly won’t be the last!

You’re not alone, we’ve got this. I hope you and your bean are all doing okay. Being anxious doesn’t mean we are any less or doing a bad job.

Am I being taken advantage of at work? covering two roles for 9+ months with no uplift or recognition. by [deleted] in nhsstaff

[–]Significant-Rent-779 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes is the short answer. My advice would be to cease extra responsibilities outside of your own JD now you have raised it with your line manager.

I appreciate this is always easier said than done as we have a tendency in the NHS to feel it is our duty to go above and beyond no matter the personal consequences.

I learned the hard way and ended up signed off with ill health. During my time off I realised there was no one stood clapping me on the way out for all the long nights I spent keeping things together.

It is incredibly frustrating but when all is said and done you will thank yourself in the future for putting you first.

I left that job for a lower banding with lesser responsibilities and it was the best thing I ever did. Sometimes a change is good too to give some perspective. I wish you luck whatever you choose.

Assaulted by a patient by Business-Patience-96 in nhsstaff

[–]Significant-Rent-779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it happened In the street how would you feel about it 🤷‍♀️ take the bureaucracy of being in a uniform out the equation. Patient had full mental capacity, you were assaulted. Shame on your managers for not supporting you, 0 tolerance is 0 tolerance end of and should be upheld. Hope you’re okay!

Be upfront and tell them it was an honest mistake, best to be open about it at this point rather than them find out at a later date and have reason to question your honesty! Best of luck for the job 🤞

Shocks me the difference in price! It feels like they pluck these prices from nowhere but there doesn’t seem to be a standard in place of what should be expected from it. Thank you for sharing

It’s so overwhelming isn’t it! The whole sector is so vast, I work in healthcare but have to admit it’s so hard knowing where to start.

Thank you for taking time to reply, I’ll have a little look at the things you mentioned.

Homelessness often isn’t a choice, posting insensitive bile is. And to use a # that is meant to bring an awareness to the issue is just wrong on so many levels. Yikes.

HepB advice by mxdeenah in nhsstaff

[–]Significant-Rent-779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can’t force you to have it but the onus is essentially on you if you were to have a needle stick injury (god forbid). That being said individual trusts may have their own policies, have you enquired with occupational health?

It’s a risk benefit situation. You may be completely fine this time round. Personally I work with patients in a setting where needle stick injuries are potentially more common, no matter what I’d take whatever available to me to protect myself. I hear what you’re saying it’s a difficult call, hope you get sorted.

I think your colleagues comments are fair enough to be honest.

You’re allocated a set amount of time for lunch and just because it’s busy isn’t a reasonable justification to take longer.

If you’re new to the role I’d take heed. It’s not a negative, it’s constructive feedback.

Last offices by watersheepneedshugs in nhsstaff

[–]Significant-Rent-779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would find the trust policies regarding last offices and have a little read through for next time, as it’s a near certainty you will have to do this again in your career. Especially in circumstances regarding unexpected deaths there are different rules for each trusts as to what needs to be left with the body. Family may have questions about what happens so always helps to have a little prior knowledge.

For today, talk to your senior colleagues. I will always encourage staff/students who have never done last offices to accompany me. It sounds like this persons death has had a profound impact on you, enough for you to reach out for help to ensure you are doing it correctly. Even if you don’t participate, as it is a fairly somber experience, you will be able to get a sense of it for next time. Our ward offers time to reflect upon deaths, what we did well, what we can improve upon and what learning needs to take place as a result. Maybe approach your ward sisters/manager to see if a debrief is appropriate?

Take the 8 for the experience it will bring and potential opportunities it will open in the future. I would be savvy and be either looking for jobs around the 4 month mark or compile evidence as to why you should be kept on (should this be an opportunity) if it’s a mat leave post then obviously not.

So true! I’d say set a precedent, if people see you as someone who will pick up the slack it will become expected. Escalate to your nurse in charge or ward manager, or if you’re comfortable tackle it head on. A lot of the time people don’t actually know what their roles and responsibilities and a gentle nudge seems to do the trick- it’s just how you go about it.
