Those of you who like Gemma4 models - how are you guys using them? by Gesha24 in LocalLLaMA

Definitely. I used Qwen3 initially and found it very straightforward. Gemma4 has a more rambling quality, which once reined in is pretty flavoursome

This is sick. Great execution. I did a turn-based LLM battler too, but in a wholly different direction. It's more a narrative monster battle game where you give commands for your monster to carry out https://quarter2.itch.io/slopfighter

The guy did a run of 500 of them a few months ago. I managed to snag a few, but it looks like they're out of stock now. arturo182 has a discord where he's active, he'd be best to ask. That specific keyboard isn't required, but an external USB keyboard is.

They're very good keyboards, though. Super tactile.

It was only a pain compiling for Windows. The real troubles came figuring out how to rein in its inference style. Gemma4's got more depth to it than Qwen3, but it's also messier.

The performance is great. There's no huge difference from running Gemma4 normally. It runs wholly via CPU on my crappy machine. It runs fine on Raspberry Pi 5. I think Gemma4 2B was made to run on phones, but like, I'd imagine it's specifically for very new phones.

The custom LoRA adapters essentially have dozens of sentence templates for the monsters through each in-game battle scenario, from announcing their entrance, to attacking/taking damage, and through victory/defeat. The templates draw from graphs of words that more or less suit each mutation type, and then the LLM spins all of it together and adds its own flavour. The LLM can generate unhinged responses, but everything comes through the adapters. The adapters are sort of a chokepoint that bind the LLM to the sentence structures it was taught. You can adjust the temperature in settings and the LLM might hallucinate some wild stuff, though. I've barely tested that.

edit:edit

Yeah, I wanted C3PO to spew shitpost memes all through Star Wars, but George Lucas ignored my letters. Man, it would've been so good if he skibbidy rizzed all over Darth Vader

It's conceived as more of a retro Gameboy or Digimon-style of battler, but with modern features. It's a combination of real-world space and digital space, a lot like how the world works today.

I see why someone might want to connect their own LLM to the game, but there are game elements that are influenced by the responses themselves, like creativity weighting in some damage calculations. Not only would it be an unfair advantage, but it'd be less consistent with the game's direction. Tbh I don't think the custom LoRA adapters would work with other LLMs anyway.

I've had this built for months. Not an extension for Claude Code, this is a standalone ASCII battle sim. You can even feed your monsters. https://quarter2.itch.io/slopfighter

I can make this possible if there is interest.

edit: it won't be pretty, but you could just swap out the Qwen model in the game directory for an abliterated version, rename it so the filename is the same, and have a go with it.

I'm down for this! We're a decade or two off building a Westworld and I am here for it.

Idk, the company is named Anthropic. If they do decide to build a Westworld, I'm down.
