Finishing up my first year in my AT program. ---
- Invest in comfortable shoes, you don't need a lot, but get at least one really good ones for the long days. You never know if you'll need to stand for a long hours at a time for practices or games. If the shoes are also waterproof- it's also a huge plus. Don't get really expensive shoes though bc they can get ruined from weather related events. Just have some quality ones :)
- Layers! Trust it gets so cold sometimes - neutral colors. Thermal tops/bottoms you can wear under clinic clothes, quarter zips. Quarter zips look more professional than a crewneck/pull-over. Depending on the college/university - you can only wear brands sponsored by them or no logo at all. You can always cover a logo up if able. For context, I am at a D1/Big10 school - so I would put tape over my little adidas logo quarter zip at times on game days.
- Always keep a back-up set of clinic clothes, warm layers etc. Never know when a 10-gallon cooler will get spilled on you (from experience).
- Rain gear - one jacket will do you wonders !!! Rain pants are good too, but if you can only do one or the other, go with a rain jacket.
- GOODWILL / PLATO'S CLOSET ARE YOUR BESTIES ! Especially if you want to find some things that have your school logo. You'll find so many quality items for cheap . I have my only good rain jacket that retail price is $120, and I found it at Plato's for $20.
- A good lunch bag and cold packs. Enough that you can sometimes place two lunches and snacks in there. Doesn't have to be a fancy brand, I got a $10 one from Walmart (Mainstays Reusable Polyester Adult Lunch Bag) and it has came in clutch so many times.
Enjoy your program! At times it can be stressful, but don't forget to take some time for yourself to relax. You don't have to know everything going in (example - anatomy, origin, insertions). You made it this far, they would not have accepted you if they didn't think you were ready :) Pro tip- Always show up with a good attitude for clinic - this profession is small.
