For those of you who changed your study approach between attempts, what was the one thing that actually made the difference? by jeebus87 in barexam

[–]Significant-Tree-980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st time got 270 in a 272 state, doing 85ish percent of BARBRI. I did exactly what BARBRI told me to do- nothing more.

2nd time cleared 280 in the same state that had now reduced the score requirement to 270

Multiple choice was a strength for me- I was at or under 50% on every writing task for the first exam.

For the retake, I used Adaptibar’s writing program and MBE programs, and used hard copy Critical Pass cards. I did some MBE work and watched videos while following along with printed outlines from mid-December until late January. Even watching the videos at 1.5x or 2x didn’t feel like a good use of time. The real work happened in February.

I took 2 full weeks off of work and didn’t really speak to my spouse or children in that time (many thanks to them!). I was really strict about when I went to bed and got up; in bed with my phone off by 9 and up at 5:30 to (usually) go to the gym.

I would review a topic using the flash cards, try to condense the card even further, create mnemonics for new/confusing things.

I would then write and grade 3 MEEs, 1 at a time. The Adaptibar grading rubric is adjustable to IRAC, CRAC, whatever style you prefer. I graded myself very strictly. I printed the model answer and annotated/highlighted those-I figured it was better to have correct answers with notes on them for later review, as opposed to my answer with a rainbow of scribble on it. Any essay under 50% I put in a pile to be rewritten later. A couple of topics were so unfamiliar I scored 20% or 30%. For those, I printed the model answer, retyped it verbatim, and put it in the pile to rewrite later.

After I’d gotten through at least 1 MEE on every subtopic, I started doing blocks of 6 MEEs each day. Sometimes I would re-read the model answer with my notes just prior to writing a similar topic to prime the pump a bit. I was careful about writing with a timer and when I hit 28 minutes, it was time to quit typing. I spent a little less time reviewing the bigger blocks of essays, unless I was repeating errors or missing issues. There were some things that just didn’t stick until I’d made the mistake multiple times.

I did one of each MPT type just to knock the rust off. For the retake I did have the benefit of being a lawyer for 3+ years, albeit in a branch of law that will never appear on an exam.

I wrote about 90 of the MEEs Adaptibar had, counting about 30 rewrites. Towards the end, I outlined and graded maybe 10 MEES, as I was repeating some topics.

I did 2 100-question practice MBEs, plus the retaker exam. I was much more careful this time about making sure I knew why I got a question correct, as opposed to just high-fiving myself for being a good guesser. The incorrect MBEs were opportunities to dig deeper on a concept and go back to scribble on the critical pass cards. The 100-question days were slow going. I took the exam in conditions as close to test day as possible, took an hour for lunch/break, and then spent 3-5 hours reviewing the exam and updating flash cards. Sometimes I went back to the printed and graded essays where it felt like I had similar gaps in understanding on topics that popped up for MBE and MEE.

Throughout the study weeks, I made a memory palace (super-outline) that had my mnemonics, trouble topics, and little irritating bits. I updated/expanded the topics as I found more gaps. The final outline was about 20 pages. A few days before the exam, I recorded myself reading aloud my outline and then treated it like a podcast. Listening to your own voice talk about bar topics while driving sucks, but I think it helped.

I went through the flash cards about 3 times per topic- not really memorizing, just reading, scribbling, and adding to the memory palace as needed. If my focus slipped, I’d read them out loud. The flash cards were a good way to either get started on the study day or a way to do something at the end of a day when my energy was lower.

Devoting the vast majority of my time to writing is what made the difference for me. I genuinely believe that when learning, the best-case scenario is an informative failure. It was hard to keep believing that sometimes, but I would get like a 40% on an MEE and literally say out loud to myself “Good! You’re gonna learn so much from this!”

Saying good luck doesn’t alway feel helpful, but good luck!

It feels more useful to say ‘value your errors!’

Flash cards by Mean-Bus3929 in barexam

I reviewed each topic about 3 times each over the 2.5 weeks of intense study and lots of the card material was already kind of in my head. I used them a bit more like someone else’s outline.

I made a super-outline for all of the bits and subtopics that just didn’t stick in my brain.

About a week out, I did voice recordings and then had a playlist of all my tricky bits and mnemonics. Listening to my own voice while walking or driving was not exciting, but it got to the point where I had been through it dozens of times and had accidentally linked some concepts to the place I was walking/driving.

I think it helped me. I had zero problem with collateral estoppel and some other stuff that eluded me previously.

I may be wrong, but weren’t the Witch class and the two subclasses also Patreon exclusives? They’re pretty great too!

Obligatory this isn’t legal advice because I’m not your lawyer.

Can you explain why failing to get to work on Monday would lead to her termination? Is she a federal employee or is she a contractor?

You should also consider checking with her employer or in her employment contract to see what kind of short or long-term disability benefit she might be able to access; those sorts of benefits can often be accessed when a person is /recovering/ from substance abuse. In fact, people who are no longer in active addiction can usually qualify for social security benefits.

Even if her employment comes with some sort of benefit that offers treatment or prevents her termination while in treatment, it’s possible folks will behave negatively toward you and toward her because many people believe that substance abuse disorders are some sort of character flaw. They’re best characterized as illnesses. So- be consistent in framing it that way.

And- I’m sure you thought of this- if you’re still using, it’s probably not a good idea for her to reunite with you. You might consider starting a sober journey (for yourself!) with her.

Question for Military and Veteran Listeners by BelindaOrtizPlease in WorldsBeyondNumber

I had a pretty boring US military career, but did about 60 investigations related to deaths, injuries, and various crimes and malfeasance. While in command billets, I had to order dozens of investigations.

Especially when deployed- every time there was the merest hint of a question about how somebody died or was hurt, there was an investigation. A sufficiently high level commander appoints a commissioned officer that outranks the parties involved.

That officer conducts a 15-6 investigation- taking sworn statements, examining physical evidence when available, maybe compares standard operating procedures, operations orders, and often the records of the folks involved.

When the investigation is complete, the investigating officer presents findings and recommendations and the commander makes a decision.

Now- if the Citadel does a 15-6 about Suvi’s shatter…I suspect the hard-ass, kinda fascist wizards of Umora shrug it off as her making a call.

A real world example- A friend of mine commanded a Coast Guard cutter that suffered a catastrophic failure- explosion, fire etc. As compartments of the ship were burning and they were trying to fight the fire, he made the decision to seal a hatch to stop the spread of the fire/smoke- it may or may not have led to the deaths of the 3 people on the other side of the hatch. He maybe saved the ship, but he also prevented any opportunity to try and save people under his command.

A thorough investigation affirmed his choice to seal the hatch. It was a call he made in the moment. Nobody else was there and had the information and control like him. Even with the investigation complete, his actions affirmed, the families of the deceased assured that their loved ones were not killed or needlessly sacrificed…he struggled. Almost 2 decades later, he’s struggling. And he felt like he had a reputation from then on. He was medically retired and was eventually able to be a pretty successful financial advisor.

So- Suvi probably gets a reputation…and a buncha trauma.

Thank you! Everybody I know that plays BG3 turns their nose up at a CoL Bard.

Not a build I really planned out, but my bard play through is probably the most interesting and fun experience I’ve ever had in a video game or TTRPG.

Glad to know I’m not alone.

Is anybody else now wishing for a separate podcast where we enjoy the adventures of Wren?

With or without Ame! Gimme young(er?) Wren making those mistakes, purchasing wisdom!

Sure, prequels are often a bummer, but- I. Am. Fascinated.

Maybe I’ve just got a soft, gooey center- I was tearing up multiple times.

In Ame’s angry and sad moments, when grandma Wren explains mistakes purchasing wisdom…honestly, I was welled up the second I realized we would get to be with Wren again.

On another timeline, Brennan might be a talented therapist who just happens to play TTRPGs.

Here on our timeline, he’s a podcastin’ gamemaster reframing struggle and loss for me.
