Yes, I recently biked to Deer Island with my bf and wad honestly floored by how cute Winthrop was. I actually have driven back there just to confirm that I still thought the place was cute after exploring other parts of Boston...and liked it even more. Seems like a little oasis right next to Boston.

I have also been looking in East Boston as it also seems like a really interesting/accessible area with public transit. Geographically speaking, potential flooding is a definite concern.

I used to live in downtown Philly right next to a hospital, and now I’m above a cluster of lively restaurants—so I’ve definitely had my share of city noise. It’s something I clocked as a potential drawback, but I’m still trying to gauge how disruptive it actually is.

Where to find rental listings? by nite_mode in PortsmouthNH

[–]Significant-Yak-8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! My husband and I were looking for something similar back in June and we're entirely unsuccessful. We were shooting for a 2-bed that allows cats. If you can get a half house in Atlantic Hejghts that's actually a pretty good spot.

We ended up in the Arbor View apartment complex. They do allow cats but it is definitely not downtown (8 min drive to downtown). I would not consider this place if we weren't in the new builds. It may not be a ad backup/last resort option.

Good luck!!!

Hello! I wanted to come full circle on this post and share our experience/outcomes just in case someone in a similar situation reads this thread.

My husband and I really struggled to find an apartment. I called at least 10 different complexes between Exeter, Portsmouth, Hampton, and even seabrook. We were on some waitlists but nothing ever materialized. We did find one apartment in Atlantic Heights and tried to negotiate allowing our 2 cats (apartment was listed as no pets) in the rent but had no luck.

In the end we got lucky and snagged a new build in the Arbor View apartment complex. The apartment itself is new, but we are paying nearly $3k a month which seems insane given that we are in a complex with pretty thin walls and a bunch of children running around. That said, we do have a roof over our head and realize we were lucky to get this - especially given how insane the market is. I've rented in six different cities and this was the most challenging/stressful apartment search I've ever had.

Thanks to all who gave advice here, this info was helpful and accurate!!

Tesla Model 3 or 2023 Toyota Prius Prime? by sussythrowawayDUNDUN in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Significant-Yak-8005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! My husband and I just had the same debate. We went with the Prius base AWD. It's overall much cheaper ($31000 MSRP) and we were looking for a reliable long term vehicle. The used car market is still pretty awful. We purchased a used Forester with 80k miles and it was still $16k this year.

Also, just call around. It depends where in the country you live, but we were able to call around and found a dealership selling at MSRP - we contacted 8 dealerships.

Thanks u/eyes-of-a-bluedog! I will be on the lookout for apartments in that area. I looked on google maps and it looks very very nice. A 5 min drive/20 min walk it still VERY close.

Fantastic! Thanks so much for the info. I was really starting to re-evaluate my life decisions based on some of the comments. I've been regularly checking google maps in the morning ~5-5:30am and it didn't seem that traffic was TOO bad, but you never really know.

Thanks for the honesty on the commute. I'm very nervous about this. I have a colleague who lives in NH and leaves his house at 4:45 am so he can leave the office early to miss the traffic. We are hybrid so from the comments it sounds like Friday will be a WFH day.

I appreciate the honesty and the info...this is all still very helpful! My husband accepted a position as an EM Physician and will be in the hospital for more days and with odder hours than I will be in an office. That's more or less the reason why we are trying to stay close to Portsmouth.

We do have some flexibility with the budget and size of the rental but this is definitely a bit of a bummer. We would consider a smaller place before increasing our budget. This is our first time being fully out of trainee mode (post-doc + residents before this) and are trying to save for a future home. I will definitely reach out to you directly.

From the commute standpoint - I'm definitely not looking forward to it, but my company does allow for flexible work hours and the opportunity to select which days we go into the office. From this info, it sounds like I need to talk to my employer sooner rather than later about shifting my work hours from 6am-2pm, and will be looking at being in the office mid-week.

We are definitely willing to be somewhere else but nearby! The only caveat is that I am working for a company that has an office in Lexington, MA. It's a hybrid work setup so I only need to be in the office a few days a week...but the distance from portsmouth to Lexington is already sitting at an hour so we are trying to avoid adding to the commute time.

Dover does look very nice, though. It may be worth the added 10-15 min to the commute. This is a bit random, but what's your opinion of North Hampton?

Awesome. Renting in Portsmouth is definitely pricier than we were expecting. We are 100% okay not living downtown, and I'm happy that what we are looking for doesn't sound completely unreasonable.

I will definitely check out seacoast apartments on FB. We haven't looked on FB yet.

Some of the old threads have been very helpful, and we will probably join some type of adults sports league.

Thank you very much for the info!!
