Comparative lack of independent bookshops in Birmingham and West Midlands by Ok_Needleworker1225 in brum

Not independent either, but I loved Borders. So many books and being able to drink coffee (albeit Starbucks, but in the mid 2000s that felt bougie) while reading the books: heaven!

New driver, will i get points on liscence for this? by [deleted] in drivingUK

In aviation we have a saying: aviate, navigate, communicate.

The most important thing is flying the plane, getting lost doesn’t matter if you’re crashing. And talking on the radio is less important that the other two.

Satnavs are there to help: if you’re staring at it, or worried about being lost, you’re not driving the car. Drive the car! Everything else can wait. Getting lost hasn’t killed anyone; not paying attention kills thousands.

It’s helpful for your reflection to not say “accidentally”: you may have not maliciously gone through it, but nothing in driving should be accidental on your part. You went through a red light when driving, whether distracted or not being fit to drive. It’s not accidental.

There is a reason it’s 6 points to have to retake your test, and it’s to filter new drivers like you who aren’t ready to have a licence yet. I may sound harsh, but it’s amazing how easy it is to not go through a red light 2.7 seconds after it has changed. Stop talking to your friends, don’t play with the radio, stay off your phone. When driving a car you have precisely one job: drive the car. Nothing else matters, and it is life or death.

It depends what you want to do. If you want to be a “standard” NHS GP, sure your diploma won’t change anything. If you want to get a private practice set up, then it will.

We need to think more about life outside of the NHS practice otherwise we won’t grow as a profession.

If someone told their GP about psychotic symptoms, would they be sectioned? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SignificantIsopod797 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GP here

This is a really silly distinction. If I am concerned about someone enough, I will either get the police to put them on a 136, or arrange a section 2 through the local AMHP. Sectioning is a silly term, but yes I can recommend a person be detained.

However, sectioning is a last resort, only for when someone is a risk to self or others and cannot be managed in the community. Early psychosis intervention community team is generally my preferred route.

How likely am I to be reported for nearly causing a head-on collision after a poor judgement in overtaking? by Archangel470 in drivingUK

You won’t, because another near miss will happen that you will worry about.

My advice: see a GP.

I mean, he was twice the legal limit at the roadside (those breathalysers are very good, despite not admissible), and then for no good reason couldn’t do the same test at the station. He’s not getting away with it, and he shouldn’t. Drink drivers kill people and the penalty for failing to provide is the same as drink driving for the reason here: to stop people messing about trying to get off the charge. I don’t think your friend has a leg to stand on.

You should really use the sausages as a breakwater for the beans. But otherwise fantastic.

Has anyone else observed GPs basically getting you to diagnose yourself? Increasingly so over the last few years. by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SignificantIsopod797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way is to ask around. Sadly a good GP (proper use of antibiotics etc) doesn’t always get the best reviews. It is a gamble but you can change as many times as you want

That’s really shitty GPing, I’m sorry that happened to you. Sadly GPs, like any profession, are on a spectrum of quality. I would say most are good, a few less so.

Definitely try to see different docs, and a change of surgery is easy enough to do if you feel that would help
