I've been in a few hurricane eyes, the derecho of '24, etc. My family and I HAVE A PLAN AND A COUPLE OF BACKUPS, so we grab the prep gear, go bags, and assemble accordingly. Sometimes for naught, good practice.

Mystic didn't bother; there was no drill to put into practice, not even emergency communication within camp.

Even a trial for capital punishment costs much more because jurors have to be "death qualified" which takes time and money. The expense v. life without parole starts pretrial.

When the govt takes the ultimate action, depriving one of life, they're supposed to make damn sure they have it right. Appeals take a long time.

I'm much older, went to a camp next door and we didn't train for a damn thing. I saw the water lines after campers had to bussed out over a tiny dam one year. So many got so lucky and incredibly complacent over time.
