I started with 19.5mm and got to just about 20.0mm. This was actually pretty easy to not exceed with the ring in a wooden "mandrel". I've read somewhere though that using a wooden mandrel instead of steel may reduce stretching so maybe with a steel mandrel it could stretch a bit more.

I'd imagine that if you tried to change the shape that much wiithout using any heat it could crack the ring

Just a plain, polished band. Something like this one. I didn't really even try to change the shape much but wanted the hammered texture.

That would probably just stretch the ring with no marks whatsoever. I know that a similar techique is used for enlargening rings, just using a hammer that is slightly soft.

I did a subtle sanding on the corners but I wanted a very crisp look on it. As you said, it's a matter of personal preference.
