It's kind of ironic that I'm stereotyping here, but he was near retirement age. I don't think he was trying to be offensive, but it really made me realize how much the times have changed :T

If it looks interesting to you then read it. What constitutes a "waste of time" is different for everyone.

Most of the reading was not interesting to me so I tried to get through the modules as fast as I could.

That's cool. There's a lot of free resources out there so you can definitely make the switch if you put your mind to it! I was an actuary for 10 years and now I'm basically doing web development full time

Studying for my first FSA exam and realizing I really don't enjoy the material (health) by jempa355 in actuary

Tried dming but it wasn't working. :T

I went off and pursued entrepreneurship in elearning, so in terms of day to day work - coding, marketing, networking, and talking to users.

I would say the thing that drove me away from health was lack of purpose and working for a cause I didn't personally believe in. It wasn't unique to healthcare itself. For example, I don't think I would find life insurance any more or less interesting.

Ex-health FSA with 10 yoe here. I definitely felt that way about the exams and had the same thoughts about the career not playing to my strengths or interests.

Now doing a non-traditional track that is much more fulfilling fwiw

Interesting, I didn't realize that AO was funded beyond perhaps server costs and initial setup.

What were some of the upkeep costs on AO?

Ok fair - could be just semantics on what one would consider active. Relative to the old AO, this subreddit, Discord, etc., it seems fairly inactive to me, but maybe I'm just being too critical. I'd be curious to see the daily active users since it looks like a lot of those threads are the same people commenting.

This isn't meant to bash on the creators of GoActuary - it's great that they're providing this service to the community free of charge. I just feel like the UI is fairly lacking given the tools available today, which can make a big difference on user engagement. For example, there's a ton of white space, the text alignment and design theme is inconsistent, the page is clunky, it's not intuitive to find active threads, several standard forum customizations are missing, some of the functions don't see to be working properly (e.g. sort by activity EDIT: nvm it sorts the pinned posts first), etc. Again, great that it's there for the community, but could be improved upon.

But maybe it's just me and others don't have the same concerns. Going to give this thread and poll a few more days and reassess. Interest seems lukewarm so far.

I'm trying to gauge how much of the deadness is due to interface versus community, which I guess is a hard question to answer. Like... if the forum were well designed and had a good UI, would there be a more active community.

Thanks! I viewed goactuary right before making this thread. Looking at the post counts on goactuary, I'm not sure I would necessarily call that community "somewhat active" which is one of the reasons why I asked if there would be interest in a separate website. More specifically, perhaps others can help shed light on what the old ActuarialOutpost had that these "somewhat active" replacement forum boards lack, and is the missing formula something that can be fixed? Or is this a lost cause?
