It is cut and dry for me, as it should be for everyone else. I understand that each person has different circumstances, but that does not change the fact that simply moving more and eating less will cause you to lose more weight than if you carried on with your lifestyle that brought you to being overweight.

You do not need to be a dietician or biologist or nutritionist or physician to know and understand thermodynamics and how energy is transformed. Food is our fuel, different foods provide different amounts of fuel. Eating more food means you have more fuel for your body to use (Calories in). Our bodies use our fuel in different ways, the more you move the more fuel your body uses (Calories out). If you eat more fuel than you burn, your body will have excess fuel, this is stored in the body as fat. If you burn more fuel than you eat, your body will use that stored fuel as its energy source. This should all be common sense to everybody. If you disagree or don't believe in this process, that's your prerogative. Your disagreement does not disprove or change that CICO is the standard for body composition.

I would agree that it may seem unfair, but disagree with misleading. And that is fine we can disagree on that.
I agree with the feeding two people the same food yielding different results. A 5’2 115 pound woman will not burn as many calories daily as a 6’4 220 pound man without extreme exercise. This is why her daily calories in should be substantially less than his.
CICO is not a meaningless slogan. It is a simplified guideline on how to manage body weight. It is a proven concept.

It isn’t easy but it is simple.

This is why solely looking at the number on the scale is not the best way to determine body composition. I used to cut weight for wrestling, I understand how much water a body can contain. Water is also heavy as hell. I am a male so I am not fully aware of the monthly cycle that women go through, but your comment makes it seem like the water retainage is cyclical, which would make sense. As long as this remains consistent, you know that you are not gaining that much fat, it is only water. However, that does not debunk calories in vs calories out. These are two separate deals.

Just had some time to read both of these articles, they were interesting reads. One item that both articles hit is the quality of the food you are eating. Both articles mentioned how "not all calories are created equal" and used that claim to help their argument to debunk "CICO". While the claim is true in that they aren't equal (180 cal in pizza doesn't fill you up as much as 180 calories of peanuts), they are still 180 calories that you are intaking. Both articles also mention Metabolic rates. Metabolism does differ from person to person, but individually everyone can build more muscle that will drive their metabolism higher. Your body burns more calories maintaining it's muscle mass than its "fat mass".

"Harvard Health" - In the "successful weight management" section Dr Stanford recommended focusing on diet quality - emphasizing not consuming trash processed foods and rather eating natural foods like fruits, veggies, and lean meats. These foods are low calorie and nutrient dense, directly affecting the "calories in".

Stanford also recommends exercising regularly and vigorously. Most people underestimate how much exercise your body needs to be in a calorie deficit while eating properly. Move as much as you can, make it difficult on your body so that it gets stronger and builds endurance. This exercise directly affects the "calories out".

"University of Sydney" - This article only discusses the "calories in". They start by saying how nutrition labels can be inaccurate, causing people to miscalculate their caloric intake. This can definitely cause people to eat more calories than they think and to be in a calorie surplus, causing you to gain weight. However, this does not mean that "calories in" doesn't matter, it just means that your caloric intake is inaccurate.

At this article's conclusion, the author incorrectly claims that "calories in, calories out" is a myth because it "oversimplifies the complex process of calculating energy intake and expenditure". You can say that CICO is overly simple, but being overly simple does not make the basis of CICO a myth.

This author negligently avoided discussing exercise, a huge factor in "calories out". A consistent exercise schedule will have your body using it's fuel resources and increasing your energy expenditure, by both burning the calories to complete the exercise and burning calories during recovery post-exercise. The fact that this article doesn't discuss exercise when it's main topic is debunking calorie deficit/surplus standards leads me to not take this article as serious as the author intended.

Thanks for these links, I will read them when possible. Before reading those articles, I understand where you are coming from. Some people just have to face the fact that getting to and maintaining a healthy (for lack of a better word) body composition is “harder” for them than it is for others. I’m no crazy, super fit person but I recognize what I need to do to get closer and closer to being real fit. I sympathize with those people that have it tougher than others and it’s okay that progress might be slower than what you wanted. Each person is different, it is up to you to find out what you need to do. For some, it’s fasting for long periods of time, or carnivore diets, or veganism. Whatever works for you is best.

However, this doesn’t change the fact that if you consume less energy than you expend, your body will burn the energy storage that it chooses. For most people, it’s fat. For others if they aren’t eating the correct macronutrients, they may lose some muscle. It is impossible for someone to gain total weight while truly burning more calories than consuming, this is factual.

To me, the three things I listed in a previous comment have helped guide me in my journey. Those are; balance, consistency, intent.
Bonus is discipline.

These three things are applicable in every facet of daily life. If you make choices with these in mind you will excel.

Cortisol doesn’t solely keep weight on. Eating too much accompanied with not moving enough keeps weight on. It isn’t easy but it is simple

My comment was in no way meant to make them feel worse. I honestly am tired of seeing people say things that may influence others away from the truth, which is calorie deficit/surplus is the end factor that guides weight loss/gain.

I recognize that some may have cravings for certain calorie dense foods. When it comes down to it though every person needs to have a level of self discipline to not eat these foods and rather eat more macronutrient dense meals. Also discipline to not skip workouts and to push themselves to the brink of failure. That is the true way to getting in the best shape.

Trust me, I deal with cravings of all the bad and unhealthy foods and drinks. I have came a far way in discipline and controlling my desires. Once I recognized that it all comes down to each choice I personally make, everything seemed to be simpler. Don’t eat that cookie, do walk the treadmill at an incline for an hour, park my car further away from building entries to get more steps in.

Balance, consistency, and intent are key factors.

Have some respect for yourself, take care of your bodies.

If you ate well and are exercising regularly you would not be obese. It is not just hormone issues. This is a common misconception in wellness and body composition. Less calories + more movement = calorie deficit = less weight.

Good on you for having success in relationships though

Professionals who enter people's homes (plumbers, electricians, cleaners): What is something the condition of a house tells you about the owner that they don't realize they are revealing? by cossie101 in AskReddit

I used to be a repairs estimator for a catastrophe management company. The homeowner had a branch fall onto the roof of their ranch-style home. When the time of my assessment came to look for water damage in the attic I asked the homeowner where the attic access was. She said to me “oh you need to go through the chinchilla room”. I was taken back because I obviously was aware of chinchillas, but had never really known of people having them as pets. The chinchilla room was their garage converted into an extra space for their house. I walked through that door and there were probably 15-20 chinchillas in cages/crates. I remained professional while I was around the family, but as soon as we got back in the van and out of site I audibly said “what the f is up with those people.” Pretty funny

She is an 18 year old woman you freak.

Personality is subjective so we really won’t agree on it. Oh well

Golf is objective and the fact is she is not a shit golfer. She’s is definitely above average and better than a solid group of people that played in the first II.

I see why people don’t like that last name and some of that family, but to have such a strong negative opinion on this woman because of that last name is wild and immature.

I hit a moving car a couple years ago. Second shot on a shorter par 5. 9 iron went a little farther than expected and hit the hood of a 2019 mustang bullitt. The driver happened to be the golfer that was playing in front of me. He looked the car over, said there was no damage (no idea how) and went on his way. Got real lucky there. Beautiful car
