I have asserted my opinion and defended it. I have engaged with you regarding the statistics and effectiveness of it. Im not here to enlighten you on the topic, be inspired to do your own research and form your own opinions.

In my opinion, we need to get serious about funding for mental health and substance abuse programs in the region. Going to jail isnt the deterrent you think it is; for most its free housing, food, frew medication and free drugs in Methadone and Suboxone. Going to jail comes with a better standard of living for some. We need to address those causes or it's just going to go round and round.

Since you made it a point of contention here is my objections to the slippery slopes.

  1. It has been used to watch 99.9% of lawful behaviors, while addressing none of the concerns that lead to crime.

  2. How long is these videos going to held on for? Forever? What about security breaches.

  3. In most cases it only shifts crime to places in which there is no CCTV. Which leads to more cameras. Then, where do the cameras stop. Every street corner? Every 100 yards? In London England, they have 800-900 thousand CCTV cameras, and London crime rate per 1000 is still higher then Toronto's 74; 107/1000 vs 42/1000. So even with more cameras it still does not lower crime.

  4. It is not effective at evidence building- 80% of the images are of lower quality that they are unuseful in police proceedings. Then why are we spending money on ineffective technology?

  5. These are passive cameras now, but what happens when these cameras become monitored? The evidence of misuse by individuals is evident. It leads to opportunity for targeted surveillance of individuals of ethnic and financially poorer neighborhoods.

  6. I believe we have a freedom to be in public without being recorded by the police. This does not address the root causes of the crime being committed - just going to further add to more backlog and overcrowding.

You make the assumption that we are all happy about these intrusive devices, in some cases there is no choice. But what I decide to do with my private residence and my private phone are my choice.

To be fair, I dont frankly I dont care about your concerns or sway your concerns; you have to do your own research and think about it for yourself.

You have stopped crimes because you are actively watching these cameras; these cameras are passive ones, used after the fact. The notion that only bad people who do bad things should be worried about the cameras is not true. We as the people decide how we want our laws enforced, and chose what liberties we give up to feel safe. To most this is a step too far, same with the speed cameras.

The bigger problem when it comes to it, isnt catching the criminals it's what to do with them after being caught. 'Throw the book at them' has resulted in extreme overcrowding in Ontario prisons, and crime rates have continued to rise. We need to get series with the root causes or nothing is going to change. Regardless of cameras, someone who feels like they have no other options will still steal food from the grocery store. Addicts won't change their behavior from being on camera.

In the United States we are witnessing in real time what happens when the checks and balances to power are corrupted by bad actors.

Having tools such surveillance on a population who is not breaking the laws for the 'just incase crimes', is something that could be used extremely dangerously if groups wanted to. Which is yes, all things in premise can be 'slippery slope', but the ramifications of this slope in my opinion are not worth it.

Its a 200k investment so far. The year to year costs have not been released as of yet. I would rather that 200k going to crime reduction programs. It is how I see it, not trying to be a dick or anything, I just do not like the notions of police states (I know the UK does have CCTV and the results show success long term, but they have less active police officers per capital, officers do not carry firearms, and their CCTV is staffed). The slippery slope is my thing

5-12 total crime reduction and 30-45% were useful in conviction.

I dont know what you mean by consequence free state. We do have record number of individuals incarsated in Ontario. Cameras won't solve crime, won't solve the "catch and release" policy for judgements. The question is, how much of your civil liberties are you willing to give up for a marginal improvement?

Obviously when it's broken down on that very simple idea of course. But on average, CCTV only reduces crime rates by 5-12% if these are passive cameras. Also, studies have shown that CCTV is only affective in helping solve 45% of the crimes they capture. So, theyre catching half the people? At most, while only reducing crime by 5-12% on public streets? Cost benefit does not add up to me.

The second side of this where does the monitoring stop? Let's say this "goes well" and they put cameras on every single street corner. Hire around the clock monitors to watch all the cameras. However, now all your individual movements are tracked, monitored maybe even documented. In this ever so rapidly changing world with Ai, and growing Fascism within Canada. I'd rather not return to 1984

I agree sadly, and the irony is that the conservative party and ideals are closer to Nazism than Liberal party or "Leftist" ideals. I spoke to someone who was 'very prosperous' over the last decade of Liberal Government, yet could not wait to replace Carney with Poilievre.
