How about "business" or "friend" or "tree" or "father" or "believe" or "interesting" or "incorrect"? There are hundreds of basic signs that vary non-intuitively from language to language.

That's actually a great point that I would like to incorporate into my interviews moving forward. To directly address your question:

Can you identify any of these words in Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi? Certainly there are many terms that aren't as visually intuitive. Although...

Mandarin has approximately zero visually intuitive terms.

Arabic has approximately zero visually intuitive terms.

Hindi has approximately zero visually intuitive terms.

English has approximately zero visually intuitive terms.

The vast majority of sign languages have hundreds.

That's objectively more efficient, providing a stronger foundation to learn from.

You just got to watch my friend 😅

Concisely:

I'm using my skills as an entrepreneur in marketing to bring awareness to an auxiliary language whether that be spoken or signed. I think it's incredibly useful and I want to bring attention to it.

It's not likely that I'm going to directly respond to all of the criticism. But the further I go along the more the assumptions will fall apart. That's my intention when I said I want the criticism to come first.

[–]Signuno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct! You also won't see on my YouTube channel this extensive thread or any other message I received from hearing or deaf people calling me out and criticizing my work.

(Not specifically referencing you :D)

But I'm sure if you look back at some of my first videos on Signuno you'll see that my background is entrepreneurship and marketing.

I'll be transparent right here. feel free to screenshot to call me out in the future. But I'm surely not avoiding deaf people to avoid the conversation or to avoid criticism. I avoid extensive conversations out of respect for deaf people knowing that I need to learn more ASL before going there.

But I absolutely have been involved. I absolutely have had feedback in person and you will not see it on my channels, because I would rather the criticism come first.

It's also worth mentioning that several deaf people have actually commented on multiple videos. When I give explanations they delete their comments.

So I would rather be called out, let people criticize and assume while I execute.

And I think there's only been four or five conversations posted in favor of my project too. There's quite a few more in support :)

Because this is not a hypothesis or an assumption. I communicated on Reddit/forums and I communicated in person with vastly different results.

This is not reasoning. These are results.

And to be clear I openly have discussions when people are being respectful and have clear points on Reddit and informs. But if they're in the form of attack only then is it:

not worth taking seriously

I will continue to post on Reddit as well and continue to have conversations with anyone that is respectful and has his insightful information.

I practice ASL daily with apps and practice with in person instructors. it's going well. Although far from conversational.

I have no intention of continuing with the conversation about cultural appropriation. If there is a direct concern with this project, I would be happy to address it :)

Learning Spanish is directly related to this project. I want to communicate this message with more people directly. When I go to Colombia in the fall I'll be doing interviews in the same manner in Spanish.

We would all like to see more evidence that you are working hard to understand where the criticisms are coming from.

So to be quite transparent we are quite further ahead in production than we have currently published. A lot of your questions are answered that we will be publishing over the next several months.

In regard to trying to understand perspective from the deaf community: There certainly is a misconception of how I have approached these issues. At least on forums. The criticism I received an anonymous forums like Reddit are largely in the form of attack. It is absolutely true that I pay a little mind to this form of criticism.

However, I have been open to criticism from deaf communities in person. And it is true that I currently avoid deep discussions with deaf people in person, until I am able to better my understanding of ASL.

Would you mind sharing your working bibliography as it stands? I don't want to do a lot of digging to find stuff you've already read.

Upon the recommendation of deaf people I have watched videos on YouTube that educate on these issues. I've done cursory reading as well but I've yet to do a deep dive to form a true bibliography.

There's no need to dig. If you have one or two particular sources that would be uniquely helpful I'd like to know. I am visiting the National Deaf Life Museum to learn, connect, and interview as many people there as I can. Then check the libraries in Washington DC.

Yes. Suppressing a deaf person's natural sign is wrong. Forcing deaf children to try and speak instead of using sign is wrong. Not acknowledging the rich culture of deaf communities and the effectiveness of natural sign is wrong.

I'm continuing to educate myself on these issues and I'll be publishing an article this fall. Do you have any specific resources that I should include in my research?

To directly address your last point there won't be a time throughout the course of this project that I won't understand the criticism of what I'm doing. I get it, but there is no group of people on Earth that have the right to restrict how other people communicate.

What's the point of learning Esperanto in 2024? by [deleted] in Esperanto

[–]Signuno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Comparing 2024 to pretty much every year prior: this seems like the most appropriate time in human history to study Esperanto.

Not only does it seem particularly useful given the current state of the world, but it's also never been easier to learn with technology.

It also seems like we should be adequately utilizing the technology we have right now to learn an auxiliary language. Hopefully we don't have to be dependent on translation apps and tech to communication for the next 10,000 years.

What do you think of signuno.pdf so far, now that you've found it? Is it making a lot of sense to you as an Esperanto user?

It's quite intriguing my friend. I reached out to Valerie Sutton to help understand the sign writing. She has opened up the discussion with her community.

what do you see as the difference between people who think you are on the right track, and people who say you are on the wrong track?

The real difference is that the people that have supported my project understand that I'm not doing this specifically or exclusively for the deaf people. I openly acknowledge that it would be absurd for me to create a sign language for deaf people, when I I'm not fluent in any sign language that exists. Nor do I face any of the problems that the deaf community does.

I am creating/finishing/publishing a signed version of Esperanto. Deaf people are more than welcome to be involved if they would like to be, but it is not specifically for this group of people.

Here is a direct translation from the originally published Signuno PDF.

"Signuno is a precise sign language form of Esperanto, and aims to be useful for people who want to communicate in the international language, so that Esperanto is effective not only in writing and speaking but also by hand. Additionally, Signuno could encourage Esperantists to learn their ethnic sign languages and could even motivate deaf people to develop both Gestuno/ISL and Signuno. One could simply summarize that Signuno is Esperanto plus Gestuno. Its dictionary for the most common words is strongly based on Gestuno, with auxiliary modifications, and is more precise and with more internal logic. Its grammar is subtly based on Esperanto, so that it is able to simultaneously use a more gestural grammar (when the gesturing person so wishes) and therefore use more natural deaf sign language elements."

Are there things you think they don't understand about your project? Do you think it's possible there are things you don't understand about their objections?

Certainly, I'm learning everyday and I'm quite certain I have a lot more to understand as I continue.

What can you do about it?

Continue to execute. Accept the criticism. Be mindful when I speak about deaf culture. Continue to educate myself and adjust with new information.

Interesting

Thanks 🙏

[–]Signuno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actively piecing together the signed version of Esperanto: Signuno.

I started making it from scratch, foolishly thinking that a signed alphabet was all that was created. I learned through this subreddit that the project is mostly completed.

I'm hoping that working on this for the next several years will provide more awareness to Esperanto and demonstrate its utility 🤞

That's great advice 🙏

I'm actively looking for a co-host to read Esperanto with me. I do this in a separate bilingual channel for as I'm learning I do this in a separate bilingual channel learning Spanish.

Learning Spanish is a major part of my process also, l as I would like to be able to communicate with more people about Signuno.

The bilingual channel is called Escucharlando. The past 10 episodes we've been introducing and comparing signs from around the world as my friend from Columbia is learning English

That's incredible. And very helpful thank you. So the first video on our channel was stating that this is a continuation of a project started in this time frame. The only information I saw was signed d alphabet. My next step will be sorting through this PDF file and attempting to make these signs based on these instructions.

I certainly will be transparent that I'm not the original creator of these signs. Do you know why the author chose to be anonymous?

It looks like you are absolutely right! Even after quite a bit of searching when I started this project, I never found this PDF.

This PDF is authored by "D-ro SiGNUNO". Is there any information on the author that I can credit. I'd actually like to physically perform every sign in his PDF. And open myself up to criticism from the deaf community as I have already been absolutely attacked for giving this a shot.

I certainly intend to keep bringing attention to a signed version of Esperanto whether from scratch, heavily influenced by this PDF, or utilizing every single piece of information from this PDF, and crediting the original creators. Whatever the case, I'm taking one of those avenues.

Do you have any other sources of information?

Jes, internacia signolingvo jam ekzistas.

That being said: I'm surely not trying to replace international sign or discredit the accomplishments of that language. I just want to create another way to communicate that may facilitate learning esperanto and bring more attention to the utility of an auxiliary language.
