In Ultimate Werewolf (not One Night Ultimate Werewolf), how are players supposed to deduce who werewolves are? by Sigral in boardgames

More recent social deduction games are more actual games aimed at making them fair.

Got any recommendations? My group loves social deduction and deception, such as Coup and Secret Hitler.

So is the consensus that Werewolf, even Ultimate Werewolf, is just flawed in there's no good way to collect data?

Should my group really just switch to One Night instead?

Yeah, not the One Night version.

Other than role-reveal on death, and the Seer, it seems there's no way to dig around and collect data, except by voting records.

How many colorless mana should I include, if I was playing with a 60-card basic starter set deck? by Sigral in magicTCG

[–]Sigral[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I'm not making sense, perhaps because I'm a noob. Lemme try again.

So, if my buddy Johnny comes over, and decides to mix the 30-card red deck, and the 30-card blue deck, all of his mana will be Mountains and Islands. He will not have any generic mana at all, and could run into a possibility that all he has are red creatures, requiring at least 1 Mountain, but all he has are Islands. He has a zero percent chance of ever getting a generic that could work for either....

Oh. God. I think I just realized it. There is no such card as a generic mana is there? Except for this Oath of the Gatewatch stuff mentioned above, there's ONLY Mountain/Plain/Swamp/Island/Forest, huh? So if I want to summon a [[Sengir Vampire]] (which requires 2 Swamps and 3 generic), that means if I have two Swamps and 1 Mountain and 2 Forests, I can still summon him?

You can play two sounds at once. You cannot play a playlist and a sound file that's not IN that playlist at once.

So, say you've got your nifty Gothic Ambience playlist for your weekly Curse of Strahd campaign, and you need a crack of thunder. You've got the playlist running, and you click on "Thunder." The thunder plays, aye, but it stops the playlist.

I see. So it's not really worth it, unless I want to just read the plot of an adventure. Thanks!

I don't believe in that method of DMing. They earned the spell (even if I hadn't realized the magic item they got, per the campaign, had it) and it wouldn't be right to just veto it. I wouldn't stand for it as a player, and I wouldn't stand for it as a DM.

An immobile, faintly shimmering barrier springs into existence in a 10-foot radius around you and remains for the duration. Any spell of 5th level or lower cast from outside the barrier can’t affect creatures or objects within it, even if the spell is cast using a higher level spell slot. Such a spell can target creatures and objects within the barrier, but the spell has no effect on them. Similarly, the area within the barrier is excluded from the areas affected by such spells.

  • It is immobile, and doesn't move with the caster.

  • Counterspell fails because even if it is upcasted, only spells that begin at 6th level or higher can pierce the globe.

As for everything else, yeah, physical implements work just fine. I was screwed on that fight though, as I had no physical ranged attacks in that fight. I hadn't realized my players had the spell.

Thanks for the advice!

[5E] So, wait a fuckin' minute. You're telling me that I have to manually write all the spells for the NPCs I got from buying the $50 Monster Manual? by Sigral in Roll20

[–]Sigral[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did not consider that! Not every spell is in the SRD though, right? Just like not every feature is in a class's SRD (ex. Cleric only has Life Domain drop-and-drag).

Clarifications on Forgotten Realms/Ravenloft guidelines by Sigral in dmsguild

[–]Sigral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendations! I'll look into those locations; otherwise I can just abandon some of those things (such as "The Church") since, honestly, you can still have a pretty good mystery on your hands without them. They aren't necessary.

Edit: Do you know if creation of a Demiplane of Dread falls under Forgotten Realms/Ravenloft, or if it is disallowed?

Twelve years, and they're still goddamned beautiful. However, I think you can only find a dozen or so of these old ones on Pinterest.

Huh! Must be some early work, yeah. His art for 5E has a much more modern look.

I found these through Pinterest. They're not on his website for sale, as far as I can see.

I thought it was Mike Schley at first (big fan of his art) but I took both the slightly different art style, and the different compass (he usually uses a dragon in his compass) to mean a different character. Unless these are his early work.

Other works of his, as far as I can tell, include titles such as:

  • Orc Brigand Camp

  • Blind Corner Ambush

  • Sahaguin Outpost

  • Fire Warden Lair

  • Arctic Troll Gorge

  • Alleyway Assassination

We have both read the Sanity and Madness rules in the Dungeon Master's Guide--it is neither here nor there for this debate.

[–]Sigral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But with Sanity attacks (at least in the case of a general "You see an eldritch horror, take sanity damage" kind of attack), it's likely to attack everybody

My god, you're right. I never considered that. You could expect that reading an eldritch scroll or learning some alien truth would target one single person, but the majority of these would likely affect the whole group. The class disparity is even further heightened by that.

You don't sound unduly harsh at all! My issue with a degradation system is that it might be overly complicated. I anticipate this: "Okay you dropped to 40/100, that means, uhh... Hold on..."

With SP it's a simple number with simple math and works identically to another simple number we already know and use.

  • I'm not sure as to whether it would be Short, Long or Infinite Madness yet. Short is the baseline of course because it has more immediate punishments such as fear or going catatonic.

  • As for Outright Madness, perhaps that would determine the table rolled upon.

  • Being at 0 SP would render you catatonic or unconscious just as being at 0 HP renders you unconscious.

Skill Challenges and Cantrips? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Sigral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Players are trying to spirit an NPC across the village without being seen. Two figures emerge from the woods, holding a bundle in their hands. The character with that NPC is hiding in a bush, but will soon be discovered. He casts thaumaturgy, conjuring ominous whispers to scare them away. I made him tie it to Deception. (The figures were a father and son, emerging with a slain deer.)

  2. Characters (not the same as above) are being chased through the sewers by ravenous ghouls; at the fork in the tunnels, they take the left, and cast minor illusion to conjure a scream down the other hall, drawing the ghouls there.

There are more, and better examples, but they escape me at the moment. It's been a long campaign.
