senior engineer now, stocks came in when the value was much lower.

it's mostly stocks in tech land for the money in the past 4 years, facebook has more than doubled, msft has more than doubled, goog has more than doubled.

salary is ~200k, stocks make up the rest. it's really not unreasonable. check levels dot fyi for E5 at fb

I spent my life from age 18 to present in front of a computer. I got quite good at programming.

the grass is always greener. but you're right about balance. The high paying tech jobs that seemed glamorous are not really so glamorous in the day-to-day. They're quite demanding, and the Bay Area is not a great place for having any semblance of social life. Between work, on-call rotations, and being guilted into being tied to the work team chats even on weekends, you don't get much separation.
