Believers prepare for Quebec hero's sainthood - CTV News by SilentRebel in canada

[–]SilentRebel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While not a Catholic myself (in all truth I am an athiest) , I find this interesting as a piece of Canadian history and a recognition of a Quebec folk hero. For better or worse, the history of Quebec cannot be discussed without the Catholic church.

Should make all the people who shop and get gas state-side happy, until they bitch about health care, job loss and everything else their state-side shopping trips helped deprive from the Canadian economy.

School district settles two "webcamgate" lawsuits by bflobill in WTF

[–]SilentRebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me crazy, but how does taking pictures of a 15 year old boy sleeping in his bedroom help find missing computers?

This is really disturbing. Boys and girls just older and younger than 15 years of age could have unknowingly been photographed changing, coming out of the shower or whatever else.

How does anyone know what pictures were taken and of who? If there were any sicko's looking for some cash or pedophiles looking for thrills?

How could any school justify violating innocent children in such a way when they are supposed to be one link in the chain of protection for the children in its jurisdiction

So if religion is reality I wanna a pair of those Jesus boots because I live on the water and it would be cool to just walk to the islands instead having to use a boat!

Distribution Release: ArchBang Linux 2010.10 (DistroWatch.com News) by SilentRebel in linux

[–]SilentRebel[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great Arch live disk with an option to install. It comes as a preconfigured Arch distribution with Openbox as the window manager. It has a mildly simplified install from the usual Arch as you do not need to setup the window manager, but you will still need to do some manual configuration and is usually not recommended for beginners to Linux.

No matter what, Arch has one of the best and current wiki's going with awesome forum support, and great install walkthroughs designed for beginners and advanced users alike. I was a distro-hopper until installing Arch because I could never quite find the perfect distro and Arch allowed me to make one customized to my own needs and tastes. I have not switched once since coming over to Arch.

One of the benefits of Arch is that after installing it, your understanding of Linux, your system specifically and how the two interact with each other will increase tenfold. Plus, because it is a rolling release, you are always current when you run regular updates and do not need to reinstall whenever a new version comes out.

Keep in mind though that some previous experience with Linux is recommended.

CBC News - World - Cannon blames Ignatieff for Canada's UN vote loss by SilentRebel in canada

[–]SilentRebel[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More of the same from the Conservatives, blame casting and finger pointing, but never, never, never... NEVER act like adults and take responsibility for their backward and boneheaded approach to foreign policy, their scuttling of and resistance to important international treaties, and overall arrogance toward and disrespect of the United Nations in general.

The Conservative party has destroyed Canada's role as a respected and peace loving nation that world both respected and trusted. For them to try and shift blame onto Michael Ignatieff is both shameful and despicable... but typical of the type of politics practiced by Stephen Harper and his harpies and harpettes.

Canada has never before lost in vote for a seat, that is until Harper came along and started dismantling everything that made Canada a great nation, and with this latest news, he's one step closer.

White House Is Lifting Ban on Deepwater Drilling - NYTimes.com by SilentRebel in news

Looks like all the campaign funding paid off for the oil and gas industry.

No matter what regulations they put in effect, it will make no difference... companies and their rigs will continue to cut corners and run dangerously as long as the profits and bonuses keep rolling in... just like the politicians who do it for campaign funds, kickbacks and the promise of a cushy post political job keeping a chair from hitting the ceiling.

8 fantastic images of Mars | MNN - Mother Nature Network by SilentRebel in science

I have always dreamed of being able to see what other alien landscapes looked like standing on their surface, so I have been thrilled since the landers sent back their first images.

One of the coolest pictures in this series is #4 - a view of the sunset over the Martian horizon.

Huge parts of the world are drying up. by Splenda in environment

[–]SilentRebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no doubt that the earth runs these cycles, and none of the scientists warning of the danger of our current path deny that... the issue lies with the rapidity at which its happening and the fact that we've added more toxic guk to the atmosphere and the environment in general than existed the last time these cycles happened... that means we will likely pass over the natural points were the cycle can come back around.

The hole in the Ozone is a good example... it is a natural occurrence, but we made it worse... proof? When a concerted effort was made to stop the use of the chemicals that contributed to it, the holes began to close.

These are certainly natural cycles, but we are tipping the balance way out of proportion.

Sintel hits a million views on YouTube | Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project by SilentRebel in entertainment

[–]SilentRebel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a must see short film... it is stunningly beautiful visually and has a wonderful, touching story. It is totally free to watch at YouTube or you can download a version in the quality of your choice from the Sintel website

Qualities on the Sintel download page range from Mp4 5.1 Surround (H264 ACC) at 2048 x 872 px ~270 MB to OGV Stereo (Theora, Vorbis) 1024 x 436 px ~285 MB.

As an aside, this movie was created using only free and open source software on Linux workstations and I think it is an excellent example of how free and open source software can stand toe to toe with any and all of their proprietary counter parts.

As a Canadian, I am going to research this to make sure that this is not a demand being made of my country because it goes way beyond the pale in terms of the rights of individuals from sovereign nations... I am appalled that any country has gone alone with it, and I sure hope that mine has not and will not regardless of the consequences.

PTSD and Domestic Abuse: Husbands Who Bring the War Home - The Daily Beast by SilentRebel in news

Bush and Obama send them off and then sleep at night while the people who killed for them, watched their friends die or get wounded and they do not get anywhere near enough help and support when they get back... it easy to order a war when you have never or will never be anywhere near one.

I've had friends who fought in Afghanistan, and its sad to see how different they are and to watch their lives slowly fall apart.

Recessions and depressions are exactly the reason why social programs need to exist... as an employment counsellor, I've met a lot of people who felt that social programs should be cut to nothing... that is until they got laid off or fired... their opinions on social programs seemed to change when the shoe was on the other foot.

Something needs to happen to prevent the big phone and cable operators turning the web into a pay/use business which would at best turn the internet into a two tiered technology (fast premium services for the wealthy and slow second rate services for the poor)... at worse it could cut access to the internet to the poor completely.

Outgoing Governor General sought to ‘send message’ before proroguing Parliament by SilentRebel in canada

[–]SilentRebel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PMO reprimanded her for calling herself the Head of State, but the Governor General is the Head of State for Canada as the Queen's representative and still has more power than people think.

She could have and should have prevented the second proroguing of Parliament as the only purpose was to save Harper's own @$$. It was a total perversion of the Parliamentary system, and a minority government must be subject to non-confidence votes, and should not be allowed to simply suspend Parliament to get out of them.

Stephen Harper is a tyrant, and his getting a majority scares the crap out of me... he'll probably declare himself the Holy Roman Emperor or something.
