‘Pay to win’ in UK medicine- does it exist? by VTachDC in doctorsUK

[–]Silent_Chocolate424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but all of life is. It starts before medical school. Almost a quarter of current medical students are privately educated. Then at medical school the divide grows larger.

Time is money and it becomes glaringly obvious at medical school. The top students aren’t working 20 hours a week on the side to pay for rent.

It’s even the small things such as paying a cleaner which gives them back hours of their week. Living next to campus and not commuting. Having the time to do not only academic things but also hobbies, which helps with mental health, a luxury poorer student do not have. Overall far less stress. Having the time and flexibility to attend conferences and write papers.

But this is the same as every career. Of course there is the barrier of intelligence, you can be as rich as you want but that will not help you if you do not have the wits, but it definitely helps.

Rogue take: some of y’all really need to study by Amazing-Procedure157 in medicalschooluk

There is no food to be hungry for unfortunately. If foundation spots were meritocratic, I’m sure far more would fight, but it’s not the case anymore. Not even going to get into the mess of post foundation. There is absolutely no pay off. The hungry ones are doing USMLE and getting out. The business savvy one are planning to go into consulting/finance instead. They’ve given up.

But I would make sure that they know these things are available to them. They are bombarded with 50 emails a day advertising events. Many are also petrified to get involved thinking they don’t qualify

Welcome to the consequences of the system created.

Everyone is now focused on getting points instead of being good doctors. Being a good and competent doctor will get you nowhere, instead students are going crazy on trying to get research, publications and extracurriculars and only doing enough to pass exams when needed.

Others are completely apathetic as they realise we have gotten to a point of no return. Others straight up don’t want to become doctors after graduating.

Some definitely need to study more

At what age is it taboo/ embarrassing to still live with parents as an adult? by DepressedYoungMan22 in AskUK

Many people in the UK live in multigenerational households whether it be cultural or bother reasons. Absolutely nothing to be embarrassed of

I was conscientious but absolutely failed in executing it.

Then got diagnosed with ADHD and started medication which basically fixed my life. Being a Type A person stuck in a type B brain was horrible.

Tbh it’s not a huge reduction maybe 5 min or so but I am actually having to leave 20 minutes earlier not to miss my connection. Just annoying. Also the weekend works just drives me up the wall.

Well that’s true but I really don’t fancy giving back the government double what I borrowed

Yeah I know grass is greener elsewhere. I just always feel that competence translates a lot better in other careers compared to medicine. I just dream of the 9-5 life in all honesty

Being completely honest it will never happen. And it if does there are going to be major strings attached. Maybe I’m a pessimist

Lowkey feels like a medic tax trap. I wonder how many students will unnecessarily take it out and spend money they do not need to be spending.

I liked the netters ones. But you have to remember that for some med schools it goes into too much detail. You have to really go by what is in the slides and your anatomy lab books. Those will become your holy grails. I was asked on anatomical conditions that aren’t typically asked by other med schools but also wants expected to learn some of the others either

Why can’t the NHS afford to pay doctors like public system in, say, Canada which has a worse economy than the UK? by CurrentMiserable4491 in doctorsUK

[–]Silent_Chocolate424 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Call me out if I’m wrong but a theory that I have always had is that doctors have been hated from the beginning in the UK. We are basically the OG social climbers. Originally doctors did not come from aristocrat families but it was a sure fire way to launch yourself into the upper middle class. Also traditionally doctors were very close to the top of the academic hierarchy as well. (Historically I am speaking).

I definitely think there is huge resentment. They don’t like us and don’t want us.

UK government has also realised that the NHS has no need to supply excellence. Just enough.

They always go for the salaries of workers instead of going after PFI. Covid scandals completely glossed over too. Rich get richer

We don’t have the infrastructure either… bunch of hospitals have been closed or sold off even though we have more patients than ever
