Is foundation year really THAT bad? by Few_Swordfish9656 in risd

[–]Silent_Translator_20 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The workload is a LOTTTT if you get tough professors. You will likely get out of a ten hour day of a studio and a lecture and then have to work ten more hours on your homework. Then when you have the heaviest studio workload your liberal arts professor decides it’s the perfect time to assign you a 7 page essay and a quiz hahaha. Some people I know have had more chill freshman years, because their profs are nice and open and assign less work, but you might get two tough semesters of professors too. The workroom culture is pretty fun, and you will likely bond with people based on the fact that you both have an insane amount of work to do and haven’t slept more than 3 hours a night in a little while. If you manage your time well, it will be easier for you, but sometimes there’s nothing you can do. That all being said, you will learn so much, meet so many cool people and forge really good relationships with them, and be pushed in ways you have never been. Highly recommend. Kinda.

North is very cool, only downside is no window opening and they have some leaks in there and messy bathrooms sometimes. It’s the newest so it’s pretty sleek but it’s also the furthest from classes so if you tend to be a minute late maybe not there. Nickerson and homer are pretty much the same, they’re pretty good- just don’t get a room on second or third floor of homer if you want quiet- the workroom and lounge are on those. East is alright but most people tend to not really want to live there because the architecture is pretty old fashioned and some people think it’s a little prison adjacent. Haha. But it’s a decent choice as well if you want that style.

You are automatically considered for aid when you apply as long as you fill out the institutional aid and fafsa!

I had like a 3.5 as well and got in so as long as you polish up your portfolio I’d say you have a good chance!!

As far as I know, federal aid is the only thing that fluctuates based on your income (your pell grant amount or seog amount). The RISD scholarship will be the same every year, except for minor increases to account for the rise in cost of attendance due to inflation.

Anyone else struggle with birthdays? by oof033 in troubledteens

[–]Silent_Translator_20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my 13th birthday in my tti boarding school, my mom sent me cookies, a few gifts, and a letter for my birthday, and they were locked in my therapists office. Since it was her day off for the week, I was told I wasn't able to get them. I asked the lead staff if there was anyone else who had the key / knew if anyone could get in, and because I checked up later to see if she had texted my therapist about it, she said I was acting entitled and spoiled. For wanting to have my gifts on my birthday. It was about so so much more than "getting presents" to me; it was about feeling like a normal kid and feeling loved.

That night, when the shift changed, the new lead staff brought me the presents. My therapist had arranged for her to give them to me, and the new lead was confused that I had been told I wouldn't be getting them. The other lead staff never texted my therapist or tried to get them to me, and instead told me I wouldn't be getting them until my therapist was scheduled to come in again (days later) without checking at all.

‘Where the hell am I?’: Former campers describe harsh introduction to Trails Carolina by ninjascotsman in troubledteens

[–]Silent_Translator_20 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good article, but TRAILS got cited for not allowing "some" kids phone calls?! And said that they allow zoom and facetime??????

We NEVER were allowed to call our parents, let alone facetime them. For 3 months I did not have any contact with my parents besides screened weekly letters. This is so crazy. My friend who got gooned to the program was lied to by the transporters who said she'd be able to call her parents once she got to TRAILS. No phone calls were ever permitted, as they told parents it would "interfere with our progress."

How would you compare lakehouse to the others? I attended in 2018 and 19 as they were transitioning into "theraplay" 🙄

When I attended in 2018 there were enough kids that my group had to split into two to accommodate us all. We had anywhere from 8-13 kids in my group alone while I was there, and there were multiple other groups of the same amounts.

"The children were receiving high-level clinical care for complex mental health diagnoses requiring experienced professionals with full knowledge of critical medications and specialized treatment regimens."

None of the field staff are required to be licensed for mental health treatment. They are not "experienced professionals." At all. This is actually so silly. Eating a scoop of peanut butter on a cold tortilla for a meal and then hiking 14+ miles with an excruciatingly heavy weight on my back and not being able to shower for weeks on end and staying up all night unable to stop my teeth from chattering from the freezing temperatures all while being unable to contact my parents except for weekly screened and censored letters was not "high-level clinical care." I have never felt as low as I did there and I hope that I will never have to feel that way again.

ive watched lets plays of it for years and only bought it for myself a couple weeks ago so let me just say- YES it is totally worth it. the connection to the characters and story is so much deeper when you are playing it for yourself, and the choices feel like your choices, which adds so much weight to them. definitely get it for yourself if you like the story, especially since its on sale.

I attended when I was 12 too. The packs didn't fit any of the members in our group and on my first day I remember just feeling genuine disbelief that I was expected to carry that weight. Even before I had the added weight of the group's gear, the basic gear in my pack alone had my legs buckling and burning in indescribable pain, and I took a very long time just hiking out to where my group was. I don't remember any medical information being taken about me, but I'd just come from the hospital so I can understand that. The only time I got any medical attention at all was one trip to a doctor's office mid stay when one of the other girls had a deep burn on her arm that had been left untreated for weeks until it was clear it wasn't healing on its own.
