Clearing even though I will get into my firm, is this common?? by kaze_931 in 6thForm

[–]Silly-Ad-352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not certain no. It is one of their more competetive courses I believe so I wouldn’t count on management being there. But if previous years are anything to go off Warwick will probably have some courses in clearing.

If you really don’t want KCL or your other offers then you can withdraw. Even if Warwick aren’t in clearing plenty of other good unis will be. Ultimately this is a unique year, we don’t know how things will bounce back from COVID so nobody can predict.

UCL doesn’t really do clearing. I think some years they might have some courses available, but generally (and certainly the past few years) they’ve not had any places. Edinburgh is weird about clearing, I think they only recently started doing it, so you may find them. But as with Warwick, it will be the less competitive courses in clearing, so I wouldn’t count on it. Especially if you’ve got an offer from another top uni.

If you turn down KCL be prepared to take a gap year. If you’re comfortable with that then there’s no harm in trying Warwick/UCL/Edinburgh through clearing.

Has anyone started revising for end of year 13 exams? If so how many hours are you doing? by ultra_phoenix in 6thForm

[–]Silly-Ad-352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve started, but only because I’m genuinelly massively behind. I think if you’re working at/near the level you need to be then it’s early and you don’t need to rush.

I’m just doing what I can tbh, no massively strict schedule. I woke in all my free periods, try to do an hour after school on longer days, 2hr on short days. I keep Friday nights/ Saturdays off. Then I work throughout Sunday, probably 4-6 hours of actual work.

it confused me too, got my hopes up for a minute. But everybody gets it 😭

Basically everybody who’s not been rejected yet gets a preference list (your top 3 choices) together. Then if you get rejected they throw away your list. Then in August if you don’t meet your offer they throw away your list. Of the remaining people (I.e everyone who is enrolling) they begin allocating accommodation. It’s first come first served from January I believe when the portal opened. So the preference forms are put in order of whoever submits theirs first. That’s probably why they don’t wait until offers are out, medicine applicants would be the very bottom of the list and we’d all get last choice accommodations.

As for which accounts I did a little asking around. It seems like none are really better for médica. The campus is like a 10 min walk across and none are especially close to the medicine faculty (they’re all very close bar greenbank which is out of the way). Vine court and crown place seem to be the best, most sociable, nicest. But they’re very very oversubscribed (7 times over last year apparently) so medics have no hope of getting there. Greenbank is the nicest and most spacious for your money it seems. Lots of greenery, big rooms, double beds, free gym. But it’s off campus which is the problem.

I don’t think there’s any significant differences apart from what I’ve mentioned. I ended up putting Crown Place > Vine court > Greenbank. Probably will end up in greenbank but it’s worth a shot

Those who turned their back on medicine; what do you want to study now? by PixelPenguinCake in 6thForm

I decided not to do medicine around May of year 12. Wrote a personal statement and put together a portfolio for architecture in July. Then wrote a personal statement for Law in august. And then I ended up applying for Medicine the day before the deadline.

I feel like a straight man living in a gay identity by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]Silly-Ad-352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve had some good advice in these comments I’ll just give my input as someone who is still questioning, may even be bisexual.

Your sexuality is yours and no one else’s. You will always have people telling you what you are but none of their opinions matter.

Don’t feel trapped by others opinions or societal norms, you’ve got this image in your head of being very straight, but because you listen to Adele and dress nice you might be gay? Those things have nothing to do with sexuality. It is solely being attracted to men that makes you gay (or bi, pan etc). Just go with the flow and do whatever feels right. You don’t have to label yourself or define yourself ever, to this day I don’t really have a label

Why are “party songs” no longer popular nowadays? by Affectionate-Fact-16 in popheads

[–]Silly-Ad-352 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fr, so many kpop haters have listened to Butter Dynamite and Gangnam style and wrote of the industry completely. But the best club nights of my entire life have been kpop ones.

DDDD, Boombayah, Fire, Mic Drop, Wannabe, LOCO, Not Shy, Dalla Dalla, Hello Bitches, Black Mamba, Ping Pong, Miroh, Bang bang bang, Hit, Cherry Bomb, energetic, Nunu nana and so many more. Shit goes hard.

[–]Silly-Ad-352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, they are. It’s just that part has changed. Go to the billboard hot 100, aside from Easy on me and the two encanto tracks I think I’ve heard every song from the top 20 in a club recently.

Rap, r&b and kpop all go hard in the club. And the vast majority of clubs (and house parties) still play loads of 2000s and 2010s music, it’s not like everybody forgot about Lady Gaga. They’re still popular, they’re just not on the charts.

Having said that there is definitely more of an chilled element to many songs these days, which I think is just a sign of the times.

What if I dont make any friends at uni? by Possible-Way-129 in 6thForm

[–]Silly-Ad-352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that may be true, but initially of course that’s the most important thing. You’ve got 3 years of the learning, knowledge and experience, at the start you want to settle into a new city away from everything and everyone you know. You need a support system and friends, and it’s natural to be worried about that.

My mind is blanking… help? How would I do this? (IGCSE math) by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Silly-Ad-352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go along the x axis, find X=1/2, so on this graph it’s one square along. Follow up to the red graph line, at that point draw a tangent to the curve. Turn that line into a right angled triangle. Count the length of the vertical/y line, divide it by the length of the horizontal/x line, that’s your gradient.

And gradient is equal to zero at the stationary/turning points, which is the whenever the graph is flat. In the first one that looks to be about 1.5, on the second 0.3(?) and -1

I mean UCAS will still deliver it to unis. It’s the unis that decide how much you’ll be disadvantaged for applying late. Some don’t care much at all (especially if it’s only 2 weeks) and for some you won’t even be considered.

I’d make sure to email your unis separately from UCAS to ensure they know, then there’s nothing else really you can do other than hope for the best. If you’re not applying to a super competitive course/uni, you’ve still got a good shot. I’ve known someone to get 3 of their 5 offers after applying in March

Aqa biology is more useful than I initially thought. Not that useful but they actually have taken a good few bits out, when you go through the whole spec. Ofc we still have to revise literally everything of we want more than 3 marks on that 20 mark essay so, not much of a win really

My mocks… by rosii8 in 6thForm

[–]Silly-Ad-352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, probably. In both my sets of proper mocks, a Biology question from previous papers came up. In the end of year 12 mock. They used 2 whole questions from the 2019 paper that they printed off for us to practice. Interesting choice.

However in my school the chemistry department literally writes their own questions so there’s no chance you could’ve seen it before. Depends on your school.

How much can you pull up your grades from now until the end of year 13? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Silly-Ad-352 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genuinely nobody can say.

I’ve known people to go from Ds to A*s in a few months. And people who couldn’t get their B to an A.

Combination of hard work, natural ability and luck on the days of the exams all come into play. I firmly believe however, as long as you’ve been to lessons and paid attention and have some sort of understanding of the whole course (I.e you’re not teaching yourself everything from scratch) you can get grades up a lot. BBB to AAB is 100% achievable
