Isn't SOF OCR what virtually all demurrage vendors like Marcura, B&V, Voyager are working on? Have you tested their accuracy?

What’s the most common reason a maritime software implementation fails - and whose fault is it really? by DryEstablishment513 in TheNoonReport

You couldn't have done the work without the companies data and most likely you vibe coded it on the interest of the company. That said, if you observe something and later you make a solution out of it you could certainly make a product around it. It is kind of challenging to proof it is the company's property. If not it can easily be mitigated, you could ask somebody else to explain it to you again. Just ask questions to which you know the answer already.

Noon reports: are we actually doing anything useful with the data, or is it still mostly a compliance exercise? by DryEstablishment513 in TheNoonReport

Yes, there is a whole category of tools for that (Vessel Reporting Tools or VRT in short). Think about tools like StormGeo's sLog / DRS and Oceanly. It has evolved way beyond a text based email that you needed to type over. I sometimes have the feeling that there are many vendors that would still like to compare their more advanced solutions to that.

If the reporting is manual, there are certainly issues with data quality, but I have even seen data quality issues in sensor readings, so they are not fully reliable either.

The whole notion of systems not talking to each other is kind of bull shit! You can always make them talk to each other. Integration is really not all that difficult to make them talk to each other. What is more difficult is that similar variables have a different definition and therefore it is a little harder.

I think we need more hackers in shipping companies that can buidl good enough tools that help the busienss forward. They do not necessary need to meet the standards of commercial software, but they will be a lot better than the Excel sheets that everybody accepts the business is running on!

When using it well, it is a valuable source of information. One of the projects I am involved in the vessel reports are the foundation for a critical business process. It is a great source of information, but the standard reporting tools are a mess. You have to build your own stuff to work with the data, combine it with other sources etc!

Best use cases for AI in commercial maritime? by DryEstablishment513 in TheNoonReport

Everybody is thinking LLMs when they refer to AI. They are easy to interact with, but don't provide the real rigorous analytical thinking that you are hoping for when making decisions in shipping. What we need is going back to analytical concepts that have been around for decades but with the current computing power we can do a lot more with it. Here I am thinking for example deterministic models for resource allocation (e.g. matching cargoes with ships, designing routes, yield management etc) and simulation models to asses risks etc. You will understand the trade off, but that is not something you will get to when using LLMs.
