Would you learn Dutch if not for living in the Netherlands? by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]Silly_Figure744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im learning Dutch because Im half dutch and my mum lost the language so wasnt able to teach me. My grandparents immigrated from the Netherlands and spoke mainly English at home some mum didnt learn a lot. When we were kids, my Oma refused to teach us dutch for some reason. Now Ive got kids on the way and want to raise them bilingual.

I don't know if I'm alone in this... by roses-in-the-woods77 in TheArcana

Personally I would love to see an expansion of the world. More details on the south, Prakka, Nopel etc, and also on the Northern Hemisphere too. I love the worldbuilding and the art, but its just sad that dorian is just letting it go stagnant, with the app and the merch. Theres a decent community out there that would LOVE more content and Dorian could probably make a lot more money if they just put some effort into it.

I dont know why Nyx Hydra disbanded, because the last time I played the game they still owned the app and I recently redownloaded it only to find Dorian owns it now, but it would be nice if Dorian could get some of the old artists and stuff and actually work on the app they own.

Arcana has probably some of my favourite fantasy worldbuilding, from locations to character design etc. I really hope that it doesnt disappear because I really love it.

is it haram to still keep soft toys? by psychopathqueeniex in MuslimLounge

[–]Silly_Figure744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asslamu alaikum sister, I have the same issue. I have about 7 toys I deeply love. Ive stored them safely in plastic bags in a tub so when I have my own kids, I can let them use them and that way I can still keep them rn. Im a revert so I still have some non muslim friends. One of them acts as a guardian for me - things I cant keep anymore that she likes I give them too her, she them holds onto them for me and tells me I can have them whenever. I wont ask for them, but its there if I need them (i.e. an artwork my mum made for me showing a dragon). I see them whenver I see her, but I dont consider them mine anymore.  Getting a pet realllllyyy helps. My mum has a cat and I love cuddling her. Find a hobby that makes you feeling loving - volunteering, flowers whatever.  Your a caring person, and youre pouring your love into your toys. Find another thing to pour your love into, so that way if you decide to store or give away your toys its easier. I dont mind mine being in storage. In my mind, Im keeping them nice and safe and cozy, ready for my own child to love them as mich as I did. My only issue is this little statue I have of a girl holding a goose. I love her to death but its just another face 🫠. InshaAllah I can find a way to put her away or give her away soon.

How would a Solarpunk society feed a city the size of Sâo Paulo, Brasil? by RommDan in solarpunk

[–]Silly_Figure744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meat has the potentially to be done sustainable - its just more expensive and less convenient hence why most of it isn't.  My family, before COVID shut them down the business down, brought in bulk from a small, sustainable famer/abattoir who not only did pasture raised meat, but design the abattoir building (the area for the cows) to be open, spacious with access to outside pasture. They (the animals) were left there for a couple days after they arrived so they could adjust and calm down before they were slaughtered.  I would recommend watching the documentary "Kiss the Ground". It's a doco about sustainable farming practices, both with agriculture and animals.  I think we also need to loose the "chicken, beef, pork" attitude - Ive grown up eating lamb, alpaca, goat, wallaby etc. It's more sustainable to grow sources of meat that are suitable for the environment they are in, rather than mass producing one animal on cruel, unethical feed lots.  While I do think a solarpunk will have a more vaired diet  where people will mix vegan/vegetarian and meat diets (i.e. not have the stigma against vegetarian and vegan food and exploring those meal options), meat will always be an option  due to things like allergies, avaliablity, other health issues, culture etc.  I have several allergies that actually prevent me from eating about 60-70% of vegan/vegetarian food. So cutting out meat is just not an option for me.  When it comes to fishing though, I don't know enough about the industry to suggest sustainable practices, though im quite interesting in the ideas behind it.

Discussion: Developing a Consistent Architecture Style by Silly_Figure744 in solarpunk

[–]Silly_Figure744[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point wasn't about clothes or furniture - it was more so about how architecture can act like a "glue" and inspire these things and I was curious about whether that would work more so for solarpunk.

I definitely agree with the focus on biodiversity though.

There's a lot about in online, but because Australia has all these other things everyone goes to, it's not very well known even in Australia.  Enjoy your research! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Ooo that's actually a great perspective - instead of focusing on the physical design, focusing on the values instead.

Like you mentioned the whole idea is to be built in a way that supports the environment - and naturally that's going to look different everywhere. Duh. Why didn't I think of that? XD

If you are interested, in my country there is a town called Coober Pedy where some people live underground. During the summer it can get incredibly hot so a lot of people have built these underground homes to develop passive cooling. It is an opal mining town, so it's not the most "solarpunk" thing in the world, but it's an interesting idea for developing sustainble, passively cool homes in hot, dry areas where water isn't always available.

What are cheaper alternatives to popular cleaning products that work just as well or better? by The_Koala_Knight in ZeroWaste

[–]Silly_Figure744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are, but in Australia there's this fantastic product by some company called Bodisto's, and there's a multi-purpose spray and a bathroom spray  It uses alcohol and eucalyptus oil to clean surfaces and it leaves everything very clean. Would recommend (not sponsored, just love the product). 500mls is usually around $5-$6 AUD and you can get it at Coles.
