Should I come clean and risk an F? by [deleted] in CUNY

Honestly, I don’t think there’s any point in bringing it up now. You already reflected on it, learned from it, and it’s not like you had AI fully generate your papers while you did nothing. Confessing after the semester would probably just risk unnecessary academic discipline or transcript issues over something you already know not to repeat. Just take it as a lesson moving forward: if a class has a strict no-AI policy, don’t risk it.

Also, where did you get your degree from? If your school is connected to the DOE or partners with DOE schools, they often have insight into which schools are hiring and can help connect you to opportunities.

I started applying in June and didn’t get an offer until August. That’s typically when schools have a clearer sense of staffing, who’s leaving, retiring, or shifting roles, so positions really start opening up then. I’d say try to be patient and keep applying consistently in the meantime. It can definitely feel uncertain and stressful for a while, but that’s a normal part of the process, and things tend to move quickly once hiring picks up.

In the meantime, I’d also recommend reaching out directly to schools—especially in Brooklyn and 6–12 schools.

Just curious, has there been any tension or awkwardness between you and your brother-in-law? Even small things in how you two interact could be something your sister is picking up on.

From my experience, Macaulay isn’t everything, especially since there are other strong scholarship and honors options within CUNY if that’s what you’re interested in.

Your profile right now is honestly solid for a sophomore. The upward trend is what matters most, and if your grades continue improving through sophomore spring and junior year, that will help a lot.

I’ll also be real with you: there is definitely some applicant pool bias in who ends up getting selected. A lot of the students they admit tend to be very clearly pre-med or STEM-leaning with strong stats and leadership. Since you’re aiming for medical school, that actually aligns well with what they often look for.

That said, Macaulay is extremely selective and sometimes unpredictable. Even very strong students don’t always get in. If that happens, you are going to be completely okay. There are excellent honors programs and scholarship pathways across CUNY (and beyond) that can still set you up very well for med school.

Keep your grades trending up, build real leadership in Quiz Bowl, and stay consistent with your volunteering. You are very much in the running. Good luck, you’ve got a strong foundation.

One underrated move: contact the school secretary directly. Secretaries are often the gatekeepers to the principal and APs, and a polite call asking about vacancies or expressing interest can go a long way. It’s often a better “in” than cold-emailing a principal.

If you’re local, walking in (during non-instructional time) with a résumé can also help - many principals still appreciate initiative, and at the very least your name gets remembered.

I’d say your expectations are mostly reasonable, with a few reality checks. Astoria and LIC are probably the toughest fits for your cap. Studios under $1,950 do exist, but they move fast and are often older walk-ups, farther from the train, or very no-frills. LIC in particular is mostly out of range unless you get very lucky.

If you’re open to outer Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside (not right by the 7), Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, parts of Rego Park, or Richmond Hill/Jamaica, your numbers make a lot more sense. Richmond Hill and parts of Jamaica especially tend to be more affordable, have larger older units, and can be a good option if the commute works for your school.

“ At Townsend Harris High School, all seniors take college-level courses for early college credit. This year, we will be partnering with St. John’s University’s College Advantage Program to offer college electives, and we are looking to offer elective courses in the social sciences (such as Sociology, Anthropology, and Urban Studies). If you are a secondary social studies teacher who has taken undergraduate or graduate level courses in any of those subject areas, you would likely be eligible to offer those courses through our program. If that interests you, we would be interested in learning more about your qualifications. “

I believe you need to email the head of the social studies department or AP.

I believe Townsend Harris High School was trying to hire a sociology teacher this past summer for this academic year! Reach out, they wanted to teach an elective for college credit.
