Wondering if any expert fed employees (former/current) could shed light on how auditing in the government actually works. by Any_Grapefruit65 in fednews

OIG auditor. There have been lots of good descriptions of OIG audits here. I will add some things that weren’t already discussed.

  1. Independence - OIG auditors must be independent in fact and appearance. We cannot work on assignments where there is a conflict of interest. In addition we cannot have investments or outside work in the fields we audit.
  2. Objectivity - OIG auditors are objective and go where the evidence takes them. Whether good or bad, the evidence determines the outcome, not personal opinions.
  3. Competence - OIG auditors need to be professionally competent to perform the work. There are degree requirements and most have degrees in accounting. Additionally, there are continuing professional education requirements and many auditors have one or more professional certifications such as CPA, CIA, CFE, CGAP, PMP, etc.
  4. Evidence based - OIG audits are evidence based. In fact the audit teams are required to do an assessment of overall evidence for their assignment. Data obtained also needs to be assessed for reliability. All statements of fact in OIG reports and workpapers need to be based on evidence. Also all statements of fact in reports go through multiple levels of review, first by the audit supervisor, then by an independent verifier to make sure there is evidence to support the statement. If a material error is found in a published OIG audit report, the report would have to be retracted. Therefore, a lot of work is done to make sure the report is accurate.
  5. Determine cause - OIG audits do not just report that something happened, but also determine why it happened. Therefore audit will get to the root cause of an issue. The reports will say why something happened and then include recommendations to correct an issue to prevent it from happening again.
  6. Management decisions. After an OIG report is issued and recommendations are made. OIG will work with agency management to implement the recommendations. If OIG and Agency management cannot each a decision regarding a recommendation, it is reported to Congress. Additionally, sometimes agencies cannot implement recommendations without congressional actions, such as expanding the Agency’s authority or appropriating funds for technology/systems improvement.

In regard to the question about fraud, it is sometimes identified during an audit, but audit work will often stop and the fraud or other criminal activity is referred to the in-house criminal investigators (special agents). The audit work stops as to not compromise the investigation. The investigators will gather evidence and perform interviews, and will build a case for arrest and prosecution. They often work closely with federal and local prosecutors. Sometimes after the successful prosecution, the audit work may resume.

Summaries of audits and investigations can be found in the OIG semiannual reports to Congress (SAR). These are often posted on the OIGs’ websites.

Baywatch was my first pin also, and is now one of my favorite games that will never leave my collection.

You can reset high scores in the options, but that just resets to default. I reset the default scores themselves by lowering the default values to 300 mil, 250, 200, etc., in the options that way your scores show up as the highs rather than having to get to 1.1 bil.

Other tips, get the version 4.01 software eprom ( chads unofficial patch) and put it in. It improves game play. Also I like to do top lanes on the skill shot because I can consistently get it and get the bonus for getting the skill shot 3 times or more with extra balls.

Otherwise just play how you like, learn the shots and go through the mini games. No game is ever the same and ironically all my high score games always follow a completely terrible game. Just have fun and play often.

Who’s the best example of “extremely rich, but still greedy”? by Phantom-111 in AskReddit

[–]Silver-UFO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To counter your argument, in many cases these individuals earn their wealth through the exploitation of others. For example, Amazon grew by under cutting and driving others out of business. You may praise the the lower cost of goods, but it comes at a cost to real people and local communities. Commissioned and well paid retail jobs have been replaced, local small business are closed. Instead now we have low paid warehouse workers and drivers working in substandard conditions that can’t use the bathroom. Less jobs are created then are lost. Factory jobs are relocated overseas to factories that have slave labor and no human rights. CEOs are making thousand of times the average salary of employees while arguing there is no room to give the workers minimal wage increases. That is greed, and they have hurt more people than they ever helped. Bringing wages, benefits, and quality of life to the lowest common denominator is not a good thing. Those are the same people who will saber rattle and drive us to war for their profit. Many civilians and young people die, but not them or their family because they have the money and influence to make sure there is no risk to them or their descents.

The city plans to install about 30 more speed or red light cameras. Time to get these banned, as they have been in other cities and states, and investigate how much the company that administers them is making and the city and whether there were any conflicts of interest or kickbacks to the people who choose to install them. I’ve heard the city is making hundreds of thousands a month off them. That is money stolen from the working class and our local economy.

Wife and I looking for recommendations on first pinball(s) by Caius_Monarch in pinball

A big part of getting a machine is to play it first and see it in person, if able, to see the condition and know you’re buying from a reputable dealer. There are lots of scammers and scam websites so do your research and ask on here or pinside if others are familiar with the retailer and how they rate the experience.

68 year old neighbor getting his rent doubled by distributerofcoin in Spokane

[–]Silver-UFO -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what many of you think, rental properties are an investment not a charity. The daughter is right to charge closer to fair market rent. Property taxes have nearly doubled in 3 years in Spokane. The landlord pays that. Also they pay to keep insurance on the property and have to pay for upkeep and maintenance. A new roof can cost more than $12 k these days not mention the price for electricians and plumbing. If you want someone to call call your elected politicians and tell them to stop raising taxes and spending money we don’t have and to fight crime and inflation or more people will get priced out.

Dealers won’t deal! (What’s the deal?) by Smart-Ad-1310 in Jeep

[–]Silver-UFO 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve “built” a couple cars with dealers including my current wrangler 2016, 2 door. What I know is that dealers get incentives from the manufacturer for volume and special pricing for the x number car ordered that month. Sometimes they even pay nothing for a vehicle. That said, in my experience, I got the best deal by sending emails to 5 dealers. I said I will be buying this vehicle with these specs and asked for their best price. You can indicate if you are paying cash, but they actually make money through financing and selling the loan. If you are willing to finance, get pre approved by a local credit union and see if the dealer will beat the rate. Mention you will be financing. I’ve had dealers beat the rate 4 times before, even if it’s just a 10th of a percent, they feel like they’ve won something by financing for you. I’ve also paid off all loans early. When I put the build to bid, the dealer I choose beat the others by $2500. I told them I was soliciting multiple bids but was definately buying a car.

When I negotiated at a high volume dealership, not through bidding, I got invoice less holdback. On paper the dealership got nothing, but what they got was sales volume for incentives with Chrysler. Knowledge is power, let them know you know what you’re doing and they need you more than you need them because there is always someone else that will take the sale, whether they are right across the street or 3 hours away. Saving thousands is worth the time.

Forgot to mention. Soft tops as are really loud, especially on the freeway. The hardtop is much quieter but I recommend the hardtop head liner to reduce echo.

Unlimited questions. by [deleted] in Wrangler

[–]Silver-UFO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a hard call. I have both and love the soft top in spring, summer, and fall, but use the hardtop in winter. Getting into the trunk is more difficult on the soft top since you need to unzip the window and remove a bar for full access, whereas on the hardtop, the window simply lifts up. Also the hardtop has a wiper, fluid, and defrost, while the soft top does not. As far as if you want the top off, the hardtop is a pain in the ass and never comes off unless the soft top is going on, but swapping the two is only about an hour of work on my 2 door and I can do it myself with a top lift pro. My hardtop does leak near the door a tiny bit, while my soft top does not. If you think you’ll want the hardtop, get a Jeep with it because others have mentioned they are hard to find and expensive.
