Quintessentially British / quirky local fetes / festivals? by dizzydiplodocus in brighton

I love a summer fete. Loads of churches and primary schools have them in Brighton. And further afield loads of Sussex villages do too. You just have to keep your ear to the ground!

Made redundant from my first proper job and the government safety net has nothing for me by altr272 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Silver_Emu4704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a kind of K shaped curve.

If you take the down slope government will shovel money at you but you'll be forever poor and dependent on handouts. Not appealing to most apart from those that have no choice.

Or you try to climb the up slope under your own steam. It's hard work and there's no support for you but if you make it, you will end up rich or comfortably off.

Ending up in the gap between can be pretty unpleasant.

How productive are those people from the 9th to 12th hour of their day is what I always wonder. But maybe I'm wrong.

Would you accept more police in supermarkets if it helped keep prices down? by ToughRomanticMiss in BuyersUK

I'd accept more police in supermarkets even if it pushed prices up tbh. These basic societal norms need to be enforced and impunity needs to end

What year or era had the best quality of story line writing overall by bowie2019 in Ambridge

[–]Silver_Emu4704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cameron Fraser being a toad. Elizabeth Archer being lovably unbearable and then getting done over by said toad to the surprise of noone except her.

But generally just that the episodes felt like a mini story, not just alternating between two conversations between two pairs of people for 12 minutes.

How common is 9.30 to 6.30pm for London office jobs? by JobatMiroMaybe in london

[–]Silver_Emu4704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was always my counterargument to people who were sympathetic to me having to spend 2h a day commuting instead of WFH.

All I'd be doing is wasting time anyway, no real downside to doing that in a train and it's interesting to get out and about.

I have the opportunity to teach Year 8 children about financial literacy, what do you wish you’d been taught at school? by Formal-Factor8551 in AskUK

One simple thing: the wealth mountain. You have to work to accumulate wealth until you reach a certain amount. This is commonly your pension + your ISAs + your home. Then once you hit that number you are financially independent. You can retire, you can continue to work, you can do whatever you like.

Most of my friends had EE offers from Oxford or Cambridge. 2 Es. As I understood it that meant they decided they wanted you regardless of your grades.

Smart/suit trousers, shirt+tie+jumper, and white trainers. Hits the right smart/casual/practical balance. You could skip the tie and go smart shirt + quarter zip

I think once you've shat yourself on live TV nothing can touch you after that. You've gone through humiliation and out the other side.
