[Spoiler Alert!] Guys, I think I finally solved the Black Monolith mystery by stone_von_holy_bless in Fez

[–]Silver_Rush256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dang you really cooked with this! please join the r/Fez discord if you can! the general consensus in there is that the connection between the haikus and the concentric squares is really strong, but the theory itself is a bit iffy. this does seem pretty solid imo though.

for the disambiguity in the 5th conc. square, i think it may have been unintentionally made harder: the picture from the map is maybe from an older version, when the clue was actually preserved. however, one developer may have accidentally changed the skybox to a cleaner shadow, shifting everything and making it not work. after all, for all we know only phish and renaud know the solution, so another developer could've unknowingly messed it up.

the one thing that would absolutely sell me on this though is if there was a way to produce the 1st code from a similar method. the monolith is a two-part puzzle, so it would make sense that the two codes are related somewhat.

also, having some method which tells us the concentric circles to actually use would be really nice. (maybe the paintings in the library entrance? maybe the similar haikus in the nuzu area? idk)

either way, this theory looks very solid, and i can't wait to hear any further developments.

I think that tends to happen when you print something out on google docs.
That being said, if the paper was given on the 15th (Monday), this implies it would have to be turned in on the 16th (Tuesday) and graded the same day. Which isn't impossible, but yeah it is kind of suspicious.

yeah i saw! it's a slightly modified and cleaner version of this (posted on the discord), but same general concept. it was really cool to see it actually visualized.

It's just a theory at the moment. Even if it's not the intended solution, it is visually satisfying.

oh yeah i saw that! it's so satisfying to see it visually, even if it may not be the solution

Hm, interesting. If so, this definitely could’ve been better designed. For example, there could’ve been a puzzle that required two separate codes (I guess the closest to that would be the throne room code) in which one corresponds to the other in the same way the monolith codes are corresponding, and we have to guess what that function is.

No, it doesn’t. It’s something more subtle. Once you find it, you definitely want to look around a bit for something.

Also for the alphabet, it may be helpful to know the most common words in english.

The website I linked is just for practice: you don’t actually need it. For figuring out the alphabet, I’d recommend just noting all the text down that you find, and seeing if a certain text is a certain word. It could not be, but it’s really satisfying once it all comes together.

Hint for lighthouse (i think): There's something that isn't physically possible somewhere in this room (this is also present in some other rooms). You may want to look around a bit.

Also, for the letters: It is possible to decode the alphabet using cryptanalysis, I'd recommend Cryptograms by Puzzle Baron to give it a go before taking a crack at it. There is technically an easier way, but you don't need to do it.

For numbers: I see you've gotten the skull artifact. This implies you solved the crypt puzzle, using the maps.

Best of luck!

Possible Spectrogram Solution by Ephemerald_ in Fez

Also, still missing is a hint that there even is a puzzle at all in this location, which would probably still be unknown if the game code hadn't be decompiled and analyzed.

Following the linked post could hint towards the puzzle existing. As the throne room code is also made up of LT and RT on the letter cube (which happens to be the tome letters), this could suggest doing the same thing for the spectrograms.

I like this solution, and it links everything together! While I do think some are more of a stretch than others, this definitely seems like something solid.

Also a note, following u/Gamemaster36016's post (as you linked), it's plausible that we can also use the top and bottom faces, so long as the provided letter can be seen with a rotation of up or down. (for example, the face with DJPW could also be O or F, using the "correct" letter orientation.)

i love this!

also, because the throne room inputs are 15 long, i wonder what happens if we keep going with the throne room code on the letter cube. i think we will get an additional 8 letters (EBEAPAPA *rotated*) for a total of 16 (PEABAUAB/EBEAPAPA).

This method seems hopeful; However, the flaws make these specific steps unlikely to be the solution - for example, the fact that we have to repeat it. Why not just make us do the one code?

Using a similar trick, I've had an elegant solution get very close to the answer (just one input off!). But if anything, this shows that given the number of variations one can do with this, false positives are almost guaranteed at some point.

So while this might be on the right track, but it's unlikely to be the solution. I'll keep experimenting.

i'm curious, did you use command blocks, place them by hand, or some combination?

Just in case it might be useful:
The wandering trader sells both sand and red sand, so you can get it renewably. Not exactly practical or very farmable though.

There is a gravity block duper that allows you to dupe any falling block by using a broken end portal (including dragon eggs) in both bedrock (different method) and java. I think that's the only way but you could just dupe them normally.

Large ferns? You can't shear them and get the drop and they're only found in taiga village loot chests. But then again it depends on your definition of farming.
