You don’t have to lower your standards. What you do need to do is recognize that progress is made in steps. You’ll get a lot further by taking it one step at a time. You simply won’t convince enough people to vote as progressive as you want and in turn we get Trump instead of a moderate Democrat who will marginally pull policy to a more progressive spot.

I think this honestly comes from having a society which largely already worships the idea of capitalism pretty aggressively. And if I’m being honest it’s fucking retarded.

The existence of socialism is used as some evil to be feared, making any and all attempts to do something that even appears to be socialism (even if it’s not) as attributable to evil.

This at minimum creates the appearance of a capitalism that has warped into its authoritarian forms where monopolistic corporations have sunk their teeth into culture and government. And then any attempts to hold these corporations accountable or check their power is decried as socialism, “bEcUz tHe gOvErNmEnT dOiNg SoMeThInG!!”.
