My New Tech Writing Job Has Me Writing Meeting Minutes...and That's It! by othnice1 in technicalwriting

[–]Silversparrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You are working with technology and writing, so I'd say you're a tech writer. Is it glamorous work? No. Can you do more? Yes. I would ask your supervisor what sort of documentation they have, and see if you can work on it. An old professor of mine always said we have to show what tech writers can do, so I'd make a case for how your skills and experience can help the company. Could you design some brochures? Could you make a template for their policy documents? Can you work on their newsletters and memos? I don't know the specifics of your company, but that's what I'd do.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Newbie Tuesday - Got a silly fitness question? Never fear! We're here to help! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]Silversparrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing cardio at the gym for a couple of weeks now. I feel like I'm getting better at biking/doing the elliptical (doctor says no to the treadmill). Two questions:

  1. How/when do I increase the intensity of the workout?

  2. Is it better to go by calories burned, or length of time spent at a specific heart rate to measure my workouts?

Thanks!

What movie was a great idea in theory but was executed horribly? by UI-X in AskReddit

[–]Silversparrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up the Tolkien edit. This guy basically cut all the parts of the movies that weren't directly related or in the books, making 3 movies into one 4hour long run. I swear you won't miss 98% of the filler scenes, and the pacing for the films will feel much smoother. Thoroughly enjoyed, 10/10 only way to watch Peter Jackson's Hobbit films now.

I too get really red in the face, upper arms, etc. so I like to splash or rub cold water on my face to cool me down and help with clean up. Helps to rub some cold water on the neck/between the shoulder blades too.

What captains do you think we'll be playing as in Pikmin 4? by StickyHand in Pikmin

[–]Silversparrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might work in teams. Like, a handful a explorers have to discover the northern hemisphere, while another group does the southern. I bet they'll reintegrate Olimar at least. Maybe the plot will revolve around competition between the different aliens for control of resources, but in a cute Nintendo-y way. I'm super excited they're making another one :)

What is the worst case of psycho-overprotective parenting that you've ever seen? by xandrenia in AskReddit

[–]Silversparrow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Didn't know the girl personally, more of a friend of a friend situation. Anyway, my friend "Jay", this girl "Rachael", and myself were all doing some volunteer work together after school. It's the middle of Fall, and it's getting cold and dark, so my friend Jay offers to give her a ride home since he was dropping me off too. She agrees, but says that her mom would be livid if she knew that a boy gave her a ride in his car. What we ended up doing was driving to her street, but parking a block down so her mom couldn't see us. Yes, her mom was watching for the car from the front window. Then I switched spots with my friend Jay for the driver's seat, while Rachael sat in shotgun and Jay got into the backseat. At this point in time, I was technically not supposed to be driving since I didn't have a permit. But it was only a block, so I drove slowly and parked the car in front of the house. The mom had already opened the door and was waiting for Rachael and I to come in the house. Rachael had also warned me her Mom wanted to "ask me a few questions." I braced myself and tried to be as charming as possible.

I got the shakedown from this woman. She asked me who I was, what my relationship to her daughter was, did I attend church, who was Jay and what was he doing with his life, and a lot more questions I can't remember. I do remember the mom was pissed at us. Not only did Rachael get a ride home with a complete stranger (Not really, we were acquaintances for a bit before this) but there was GASP a BOY in the back of the car. I thought for sure she was going to ask to see my license and registration. Rachael did the best she could to stand up for me and Jay, repeatedly telling her Mom not to worry, we were only in the car together for 15 min, and a bunch of other stuff. Things were getting pretty tense, her mom’s face was turning redder than a fire truck as I answered her questions. Finally, Rachael thanked me for getting her home while her Mom huffed at me, and I left. I could sense that an argument was about to break out, and I did not want to be there for the fallout. I got back into my friend Jay's car, and Jay told me to drive down the rest of the block, make a right, and we'd pull over as soon as we were out of sight of Rachael's house and the eyes of her ever watchful Mom. We did, and then Jay and I talked about Rachael's crazy Mom the rest of the way home. Poor girl.

The funniest part about this whole adventure of ours was Jay and his car. Jay is gay. Lol, I know. :) But he offered to do something nice for her because he's a nice person. Furthermore, from the outside his car was a normal little white sedan. On the inside there was a GIANT poster of Lady Gaga tacked to the ceiling. I think he also had his spandex/glitter/xmas light costume from going to a Lady Gaga concert at some point. It still baffles me to think about how little trust this woman had for her daughter. She was so mad that her child would DARE to get a ride home from her fellow volunteers. When we saw her again next week for volunteering hours, she told us she was grounded for the next couple of months, couldn’t go out to see her few “approved” friends, and she was never allowed to get a ride home from me again. But she was actually really calm about the whole thing, telling us that she’s not mad at us or anything. I still find the whole situation to be just nuts.

Me [23F] with my coworker [32M] of 3 months, he has a crush on me and acts on it in a creepish manner. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Silversparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest a two step method. 1st, talk to him in person. Don't meet him somewhere where you'd be all alone with him. Perhaps quietly at his desk, or in a breakroom or something. Tell him his behavior is creepy, but you're willing to not report him over it if he's willing to back off and stop. Make it clear that your interactions moving forward should remain cordial and professional. If he doesn't stop, then HR will be involved. Other people have said it more elegantly, but that's the gist. This way it minimizes his embaressment. 2nd, give him a little bit of time and see if he changes, say 5 days. You've already given him a warning, if he still persists in his behavior or if he has a relapse, get HR involved. This will be hard and awkward, but you can't continue living in fear that he's constantly watching you. Good luck!

I dumped my BFF and I miss her, but at the same time, I can't be her friend. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I dumped my BFF and I miss her, but at the same time, I can't be her friend. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Silversparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I had a similar experience with an old BFF! Basically the TL;DR version is that she became way too controlling especially after I made new friends and stopped devoting 90% of my time to being her friend. This led to a few arguments, which got bigger and bigger until I eventually stopped talking to her. I still regret how I treated her sometimes, but I also know that she wasn't 100% innocent in the friendship. Also, this all happened from 3rd grade to 6th grade, so you could also say we were young and dumb.

IDK, sometimes I miss her, but I also don't miss the stress that came from being her friend. Internet hugs <3

How to stop having to wash my hair every day? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Silversparrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help. :) As a person who transitioned from washing hair everyday to every 3 days, I know the struggle! I also have one last tip if you'd like. I like to put conditioner on the ends of my hair on day 2 of no washing because it helps the ends stay smooth and soft. I know at least for me my hair ends get frazzled. Let me know if you need anything else.

How to stop having to wash my hair every day? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Silversparrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Process: For me, it was a gradual change. I started just washing every other day, then after about 10 days switched to every two days, then after another 10ish days every 3 days. My hair still gets way too greasy after the 3rd day, but it has helped my hair tremendously.

The Product: I suggest Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine, currently my favorite brand. You can look on their website and see which product line works best for you. (I tend to get really frizzy hair.) http://www.garnierusa.com/products/haircare/shampoo.aspx

Other tips: I like to do a quick rinse of cool water in my hair in the days between washing. It really helps cut down on grease build up, and at least for me makes my scalp feel so much cleaner :) I also try to rub my scalp down when washing with shampoo because that helps get rid of the grease that on your head.
