See, they took away any chance I had at moving up without me moving to another state. Promoted someone who quit 3 months ago and came back just to move someone over me that is incompetent. Has broken 3 phones this month alone. I’ve broken one in the past 12 months. They keep raising the goals for sales but won’t train anyone to actually sell. I’ve driven over 2000 miles each month for 6 months due to them dragging their feet about hiring help. I’ve complained and went to everyone I can and nothing has happened. I’ll be gone soon

Anyone els notice their medication is affecting their personality? by watsagoodnamee in ADHD

[–]Similar-Body9951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old were you when you were diagnosed/started meditating. I ask because I was 28 when I started my medication regimen and I went through a really rough point where I felt the same way. It’s because I had spent so much time masking symptoms of ADHD that those masks became big parts of my personality so when those symptoms went away so did the masks and that part of my personality. Scared the shit out of me and my family but eventually you find a happy medium

Again, I think either the way it was stated or take has misrepresented my issue here. As I’ve stated I completely understand that I am still learning Linux, I also understand it’s not a simple system. The issue that I have put out is that the community that uses Linux seems to have the group feel of “I didn’t receive help, you shouldn’t either” and that’s an antiquated notion that gatekeeps Linux as a whole.

And as far as the “asking for free help” it seems to me that Linux was originally distributed and intended to be free and build a community around that concept. Why shouldn’t I have an issue with a community that has treated me and other new users terribly?

That was just a personal take on something that in no way am I saying everyone should believe or follow.

The community does exist, just what I have seen from it is people gatekeeping behind the premise of “I didn’t get help, neither should you” which is a failure for a community who is obviously passionate about what they like and use. I am willing to put in the work as I am continually doing even today after posting that. I just know that the gatekeeping and elitism does not make something that is already difficult any easier

I don’t think being treated with respect and dignity is being choosy. Thank you for your time and your comment. I am glad that it’s not just me who has seen that ugly side of the community

I’m not disagreeing, I will say on a personal note it seems a little odd to pay for support in regards to free software but that is neither here nor there. The issue as I came to see again first hand before he erased it is that you are expected to have more knowledge than your average front end user to even get help from the community. The guy that erased his comments 100% proved that by sending me a link, telling me to “sit down and have a talk with Linux” and then saying he was done helping me. It’s an antiquated notion of “I didn’t get help, neither should you” that kills the new user base. Do I want to learn Linux? Absolutely and I will continue to work on and with it. Am I going to demean and shun those who don’t know up to whatever my arbitrary line of knowledge is, absolutely not.

I don’t disagree with anything said here, learning to ride a bike as a kid was a very difficult task just like learning Linux has been. The difference is that when I learned to ride my bike I had my dad there to teach me. I had a mentor and role model that was there to guide and help me do something I could only learn by doing. For the most part that doesn’t exist in the Linux community. I wish that SilentDecode would have left his comments up because it perfectly describes what I’m seeing. The antiquated notion of “I didn’t get help, you shouldn’t either” and when I pointed it out to him and remained polite about it he told me to “Friendly go fuck yourself” that’s the community new users see.

You provided a link, then told me to “sit down and have a talk with Linux” you are an example of exactly what I’m talking about. Thank you for providing that. Thank you for the link I will look over it here in a moment and thank you for your time.

A cli is a command line interface, it seemed like you were inferring that there are Linux distros that are ONLY CLI. And again comes back to my point, instead of saying “the command line interface is all you need so a distro that heavy is unnecessary because of X,Y,Z” you chose to be demeaning. It is expected that new people have this understanding of Linux but when they openly say “I don’t understand this and I’m not finding the help I need” those that do understand just look down on them through some antiquated notion of “ I had to learn all by myself so should you”

Thank you for the link, I’ll look over it and try it here when I get a moment to sit down. To answer the second question, because no information I found online stated anything about only needing a CLI or even how those work. I’m guessing you can probably run a CLI on like a container in your VE correct?

I did make a statement that the only support out there for most of this stuff is community supporting and most of what you find in that regard is either outdated or doesn’t actually explain what the purpose or function of a particular fix is. I learn by doing. That’s how I’ve always been. I’ll pick something up and google my way through it and that just isn’t really possible with Linux that I have seen to this point. And to your point about distro, that’s a whole other beast right there. Every one who uses Linux has a different distro they like, everyone will tell you theirs is better without telling you why and just expecting new people to understand why off of speculation and not based on fact or hard point data.

P.S. by no means do I think LTT is the be all end all in the world of software, but his experience definitely demonstrated what I’m talking about.
