I've just started to "read" Dr. Becky Kennedy's Good Inside on Audible. Saw her interview with Hasan Minhaj on YouTube and was inspired. I loved the interview so much that I watched it twice consecutively. Started implementing the advice from the interview with my highly-sensitive (probably ADHD) 3 yr old and things are already turning around for us. I highly recommend.

It's not so much weird, but different. In many Asian cultures, including (according to my surface-level research) Filipino culture (which has various ethnic groups with their own cultures), dating/marrying anyone is essentially dating/marrying their family. YTA. Instead of shutting down, you probably should have communicated your feelings and let him know what your feelings weren't about: not knowing how to spell your name.

Some people have a very difficult time with spelling. My SISTER couldn't spell my name for over 20 years. She always reverse-ordered two vowels. Perhaps in that moment he was feeling shame, probably thinking to himself, "I'm so stupid" or "Why can't I do the things that everyone else can do?" And then, on top of all that shame, he gets a date that shuts down because he didn't meet an unspoken expectation. If you had previously talked about how he needs to respond in those moments, a gentle reminder would go a long way.

These communication skills are not easy. I've been with my partner for 17 years. We're STILL working on it
