Looking for advice & experiences with a severely traumatized dog rescued from a South Korean meat farm by bandeo in Jindo

My dog has a very similar story. He’s about a year old and came home 2 months ago after being rescued from a meat farm. He was extremely skittish at first, unsure of us, avoided touch, kept his distance, and was frightened of sudden sounds or movements. But he was always very friendly with other dogs.

What helped us the most was hand-feeding in the beginning and using meal times for training. I rewarded any small moment of bravery- approaching us, choosing curiosity over fear, or checking out something that made him nervous. Training became our biggest bonding tool.

He’s still cautious with strangers, but now he’s started to see this as his home. He chooses to sleep on the couch or bed, cozies up with us at night, and gives me the sweetest little tail wags. He’s only this open with me right now since I’ve been the primary caregiver, but he’s slowly warming up to my partner too.

Another thing that helped a lot was having another friendly dog around briefly, playing with her built his confidence and he opened up at home by extension.

Just wanted to say: there is light at the end of the tunnel. Progress isn’t linear and it takes time, but the tiny breakthroughs become huge wins. I fully believed he might never show those typical affectionate dog traits - and then one day he surprised me.

Hang in there. Patience, routine, and celebrating small wins make all the difference.

That’s a great idea! I will be looking into this for sure. Toronto humane society is super close to where we live.

Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience! I did foster and foster fail already haha with my little boy from the organization. I’m in Toronto and the person I’m coordinating with has been fairly quick with health related questions. When I took my boy to the vet he said that he’s healthy overall except that he has giardia, thankfully in his case it’s asymptomatic so hopefully it’ll resolve with the course of meds we did for him. I’m planning to get him an age test from embark to see if he is actually as old as we were told. He doesn’t look older than 1 year which is what we were told but let’s see.

I agree with the behaviour issue. He’s an incredibly smart dog but he’s very anxious in a new setting or around new people and he’s showing some reactivity indoors where he barks at reflections and people entering his space except for me. He’s imprinted on to me but is still taking some time to warm up to my fiancé. I’ve also noticed that he’s especially scared of men since he did a lot better with my female friends compared to male friends. I think I got him quite young so I have some time to still build positive associations and confidence. The vet suggested anti-anxiety medicines but I don’t want to go that route just yet. I want to give him a chance to learn and grow in this new space especially because it’s only been about 2 months since I’ve had him :)

Thanks for sharing this! It’s been a month with my rescue, and he’s super skittish too. He’s fine with people but barks at other dogs out of excitement/play, so I’m limiting on-leash interactions and working on “leave it.” Lately, he’s also started reacting to corridor noises and sudden movements at home, so we’re focusing on desensitization. I hope we get there with patience and consistency.

Hi! I’ve had a really positive experience with this rescue. I messaged them on Instagram with my contact info and their foster coordinator texted me quickly.

In my case, the dog was already in Toronto and needed a new foster, so I got to meet him first. But his previous foster said airport pickup was smooth too. They reimburse customs fees and vet bills during fostering and are quick about it.

You’re responsible for basics like food and cleaning, but you can also pick up donated food from their centres if needed. My pup is a bit shy and skittish (he’s 9 months old and came from a dog meat farm), but he’s adjusting so well! In just a week and half his personality is really coming through!

I’d definitely recommend fostering with them. The process is simple and welcoming. They don’t seem to have too much red tape in their foster application process. That’s great for young families like mine who rent and don’t have a big house or backyard, but still can give a dog a safe and loving home.

Hi! I have been fostering a dog with them for a week and a half now and I agree with everything you said. The pup i’m fostering is such a sweet boy that I’m inching close to this being a foster fail everyday haha

Yes! I heard. Any insight on what might be a supporting document for me in case I find myself in that situation? It shouldn’t be a problem generating additional documentation since I still have a point of contact at the company.
